Archive vetting update — 27 September 2026. The GitHub datro branches bpvsbuckler, bucklervsbp and wayback contain a substantial working archive of Great House Farm material. The Wiki uses those copies as research leads and preserves the distinction between primary records, copies, family evidence, interpretation and unresolved allegations.

Key heritage and historical sources identified

  • BP Properties Ltd v Buckler [1987] EWCA Civ 2. The Court of Appeal identifies the relevant property as Great House Farm at Llandough near Penarth. It states that the Marquis of Bute granted John Williams a yearly agricultural tenancy of the whole farm in 1916 and that, in 1938, the reversion on that tenancy was conveyed to Western Ground Rents Ltd. The Wiki must not describe this as a 1938 sale of the whole farm. The judgment states that Western Ground Rents sold Great House Farm, including the farmhouse and garden, to BP Pension Trust Ltd in December 1969.
  • Cadw / Welsh Government ATISN 27021. June 2026 disclosure concerning the 1988 listing assessment and the surviving two photographs dated 29 July 1988; followed by the 2 July 2026 internal review.
  • Heneb / GGAT HER GGAT02038s. Official HER record for Great House Farm, including the architectural/archaeological record and the December 1988 R. F. Sugget note recording a report of “armour” under the rear wing c.1880.
  • Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales clarification. The Museum states that the relevant objects are stated to have been found at Church Farm, Llandough, in 1858. It found no corresponding Great House Farm material of that nature in its collection and no matching find in the archaeological literature, and said the 1858 objects could well underlie the local story/tradition. This clarification supersedes the earlier Wiki wording that treated the “armour” story as a Great House Farm discovery. The underlying records were released on 5 October 2026 under FOI 2026-036 (GHF-E106-R33): the 1931 provenance letter (GHF-E106-R33-A1) and the object records for the rowel spur, 63.24/1 (GHF-E106-R33-A2), and spearhead, 63.24/2 (GHF-E106-R33-A3).
  • 1990 GGAT Great House Farmhouse assessment. Research copy identified in the bpvsbuckler PDF archive; primary-archive verification remains desirable before treating every detail as a definitive transcription.
  • 1994 Cotswold Archaeology Llandough report. Research copy in the GitHub archive; relevant to the cemetery archaeology and the historic setting.
  • Archaeology Data Service (ADS), response received 2 October 2026. ADS says its Data Catalogue review identified five relevant resources: Ty Mawr;Great House Farm (deposited by RCAHMW as part of the Coflein database); Great House Farm (deposited by Glamorgan-Gwent HER); GREAT HOUSE FARM, LLANDOUGH (deposited by Glamorgan-Gwent HER); An Early-medieval Monastic Cemetery at Llandough, Glamorgan: Excavations in 1994 (publication eprint, deposited by the Society for Medieval Archaeology); and The Early Medieval Monastic Cemetery at Llandough, Glamorgan (1994 excavation datasets, deposited by Cotswold Archaeology). The response establishes these as public ADS catalogue routes; it does not state that ADS holds additional underlying material beyond the identified catalogue resources. ADS also states that data it holds are preserved in perpetuity and made accessible under open licences.
  • National Library of Wales Bute Estate Records finding aid. Research copy identified in the GitHub archive and relevant to tracing the historic Bute estate records.
  • H. J. Thomas survey material, 1974. The Wiki’s existing evidence base records the measured survey and its architectural observations; the complete surviving survey material should remain distinguished from later summaries.

The wayback branch contains photographs, PDFs and correspondence, including emails and research transcriptions. Relevant material is being migrated selectively rather than wholesale. A file is not treated as proof merely because it appears in the archive: each item must be checked for provenance, date, identity, whether it is a primary record or a later interpretation, and whether subsequent evidence has superseded it.
