Chronology and catalogue links — assessed 10-10-2026: See the Institutional Involvement Roadmap (1877–2026) for the date-ordered institution, people and evidence sequence. The reported 1988 Cadw-to-Minister spot-listing letter has its own placeholder at GHF-E152; the original has not been attached to that page as at 10-10-2026. A placeholder records an evidence gap, not the letter’s contents.

Forensic Assessment — Linklaters

Scope: Linklaters’ historic professional conduct as BP-related solicitors, especially registration and litigation work. No dishonesty is inferred.

Established role

The HMLR file schedule records multiple Linklaters & Paines letters, including 12 May 1983 correspondence, an undated letter, and documents connected with WA240304 and WA231076. The project also treats Linklaters as part of the BP legal team in the 1984–87 litigation history.

Forensic control test

The key question is documentary: what instructions did Linklaters receive, what title material did they hold, what did they tell HMLR, what did they disclose to the court, and what did they know about the family ownership dispute? A professional firm’s involvement alone proves none of these matters.

Current finding

As at 10-10-2026, the material reviewed does not establish fraud or professional misconduct by the firm. This is not a timeless finding that no relevant record or act exists. But the record trail makes the firm’s archival file potentially critical to the Evidence-Before-Court and registration controls.

Human action

Send the targeted preservation/access request recorded in HubSpot P1-LNK-01. Ask for matter references, retention status, title papers, HMLR correspondence, pleadings, disclosure schedules and destruction/transfer records.

Acceptance: response obtained or the firm’s inability to supply a file is documented with a retention explanation.

Institutional appearance timeline — linked source index

Coverage rule: this is a chronological navigation map of published Wiki source pages found by searching the current site index for “Linklaters”. Every event label links directly to the page containing the source. It avoids duplicating source narratives. It records mention/appearance, not culpability. The displayed date is a source/title date cue, not automatically the date on which the named institution acted. This matters for newspaper stories, later summaries and titles naming more than one event; open the source before attributing an act. Search indexing is a discovery aid, not proof of exhaustive coverage. 🕒

Appeal-file lead and preservation enquiry — 16 October 2026

The 31 July 1987 Court of Appeal report identifies P. Morgan, instructed by Linklaters & Paines, as appearing for respondent BP Properties Ltd. That supports a targeted enquiry to Linklaters LLP about the surviving historic appeal file and any connected title/registration instructions; it does not establish that the firm still holds the file or that any solicitor acted improperly.

Request preservation and confirmation of custody for the 1986 trial, 1987 appeal and any connected 1969/1975 conveyancing or 1982–83 first-registration work, including instructions, counsel briefs, pleadings, bundle indexes, expert/plan material, correspondence with BP and HMLR, file-transfer records, retention schedules and any destruction/disposal log. Ask the firm to identify what it can disclose voluntarily and what authority or consent it requires, without demanding disclosure of privileged material where privilege lawfully applies.

The appeal report names Linklaters & Paines—not Masons—as BP’s firm for the reported appeal. Any enquiry to Pinsent Masons should therefore be framed separately: ask whether Masons or a predecessor ever acted for BP in another Great House Farm title, conveyancing, registration or enforcement matter, and ask that relevant files be preserved if located. Treat any asserted role as unconfirmed unless supported by a separate document.
