Event Nomenclature Register — 1988 Great House Farm removal, seizure and occupation
Event Nomenclature Register — 1988 Great House Farm removal, seizure and occupation
Event identity
Working event: late-November 1988 entry by BP enforcement agents/bailiffs, removal of the occupying family from Great House Farm, subsequent injunction proceedings, and the later demolition of the farmhouse in early December 1988.
Identity-control note: the family’s interpretation that one or more people in the audiovisual footage were SAS personnel acting undercover as BP bailiffs is kept as a separate, unconfirmed allegation at Allegation: SAS or undercover personnel acted as BP bailiffs in 1988. The supporting evidence target is GHF-E181, which remains pending verification. Do not use the event label or the existence of footage as proof of a person’s identity or role.
Separate April 1988 failed enforcement attempt
The 29 April 1988 chainsaw stand-off is a distinct event from the late-November removal. Contemporary press evidence describes bailiffs and police attending, the drive being blocked and the enforcement attempt ending without the family being removed. GHF-E090-N07 is the evidential route.
Different nomenclatures for the same event
| Nomenclature | How it should be treated |
|---|---|
| “Eviction” / “evicted” | Contemporary press and legal/enforcement shorthand. Link through this page rather than treating “eviction” as the only description. |
| “Possession enforcement” | Legal/enforcement description of the process by which possession was asserted following the court proceedings. |
| “Forced removal” | Descriptive terminology focusing on the physical removal of the occupants. |
| “Taking control” / “took control” | Property-control terminology useful when describing physical control of the premises without prejudging the ultimate title question. |
| “Seizure” | Family narrative describing what happened from the family’s perspective if their two-parcel ownership case is correct. |
| “Occupation” / “occupied” | Family terminology for the subsequent physical control of the house by BP or its agents. |
| “Illegal occupation” / “unlawful occupation” | Family’s legal position / issue for counsel, conditional on the proposition that the House Plot remained outside BP’s title and that the possession/enforcement process therefore operated against land belonging to the family. |
| “Regaining possession” | BP/press-style wording that assumes or adopts a prior legal entitlement to possession. This is not a neutral substitute for the event description. |
| “SAS-style operation” | Contemporary programme wording describing the manner of the operation. It does not establish that the personnel were SAS. 🕒 |
| “Siege” / “stand-off” | Useful where referring to the separate April 1988 failed enforcement attempt; do not collapse that event into the November removal. |

Ownership contingency
The House Plot (Parcel A) is treated here as distinct from the eastern agricultural land (Parcel B): Mary (Nancy) Williams’s c.1974 statement records the 1877 sale of the house to Daniel Thomas (Mary (Nancy) Williams testimony), and the 1939 plan shows Parcel B only [EV-0023]. The later title and possession chain may have treated those parcels as one. Accordingly, terms such as “seized”, “occupied”, “illegally occupied” or “unlawfully occupied” are recorded here as the family’s narrative/legal position, not as independently established conclusions. The underlying title and enforcement evidence must determine the legal description.
