M11 · 20 Jul 2026 19:35 UTC · Sion Buckler · Re: [NLW English] Great House Farm, Llandough | Cardiff Castle Furniture
Ms Daniel, Thank you for your response dated 20 July 2026 regarding FOI/2026/09 and for identifying the catalogue references relating to Ty Mawr/Llandough within the Bute Estate collections. I would like to request an internal review, as I believe the response may have interpreted the scope of my request too narrowly. My request was for: “All recorded information held concerning furniture, furnishings, antiques, fixtures, heirlooms and other movable property originating from Great House Farm (Ty Mawr), Llandough, including any and all items received from Bute Estate, Cardiff Castle, Cardiff Council.” I appreciate that the National Library of Wales does not collect furniture as a category of object and therefore may not hold the physical items themselves. However, my request was not limited to physical objects or acquisition files. It sought *all recorded information* relating to such items. This could include, for example: – inventories; – valuations; – estate correspondence; – fixture schedules; – probate references; – sale catalogues; – photographs; – tenancy records; – references within Bute Estate papers; – records of transfer, removal or disposal. The response confirms that NLW holds significant Bute Estate material relating to Ty Mawr, including maps, leases and deeds. However, it does not clarify whether those wider collections were searched for references to the farmhouse contents, fixtures, or related estate administration records. Could the internal review please clarify: 1. What collections and record series were searched in responding to this request? 2. Were searches undertaken beyond acquisition files, including within Bute Estate papers and related archival collections? 3. Were terms such as: – Great House Farm; – Ty Mawr; – Llandough; – fixtures; – inventory; – valuation; – contents; – furnishings; – sale; – transfer; used as part of the search? 4. If no relevant records are held, could you please confirm the searches undertaken and the basis for that conclusion? The reason this distinction matters is that my wider research concerns the documentary history of the farmhouse and garden plot following changes affecting Ty Mawr/Llandough after the 19th century. Records relating to fixtures, valuations, inventories or estate administration may provide important historical context, regardless of whether the physical items themselves remain. I am not asking NLW to determine ownership or provide a legal opinion. I am seeking confirmation that all relevant archival holdings have been considered and that the request has been searched against the appropriate collections. Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to the outcome of the internal review. Yours sincerely, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] [quoted text trimmed]
M12 · 20 Jul 2026 19:37 UTC · Sion Buckler · Re: [NLW English] Great House Farm, Llandough | Cardiff Castle Furniture 2/2
Ms Daniel, Further to my internal review request, I would like to provide a short clarification regarding the scope of my original FOI request. Having reviewed my original request submitted on 3 July 2026, I wish to emphasise that the request was expressly for recorded information, not merely for physical objects held within NLW collections. The original request specifically sought: inventories, catalogues and asset registers; acquisition, disposal, loan and transfer records; provenance files and ownership records; photographs; correspondence concerning identification, recovery, ownership or location; internal reports, legal advice and memoranda; correspondence involving the Buckler or Williams families; correspondence with Bute Estate, Cardiff Castle, museums and other public bodies. Therefore, my concern is not that NLW does not hold furniture as part of a collection. I understand that point. My concern is whether relevant documentary records were searched across appropriate archival collections where references to such items may exist. For example, where NLW holds Bute Estate material relating to Ty Mawr/Llandough, I would appreciate confirmation as to whether those collections were searched for incidental references to: household inventories; fixtures; valuations; estate correspondence; transfers or disposals; provenance information; references to occupants or contents of the farmhouse. This clarification is provided to assist the internal review and ensure the original request is considered in its full context. I appreciate the catalogue references already provided and look forward to confirmation of the searches undertaken. Yours sincerely, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] [quoted text trimmed]

I can confirm that the internal review considered the clarification that you provided on the 20 July 2026. Regards, Dr Owain Rhys Roberts Attached Files -FOI2026-09-Internal_Review_Outcome.pdf <[link removed] —————— Sion Buckler Jul 20 2026, 08:37PM via Email Ms Daniel, Further to my internal review request, I would like to provide a short clarification regarding the scope of my original FOI request. —————— Sion Buckler Jul 20 2026, 08:35PM via Email Ms Daniel, Thank you for your response dated 20 July 2026 regarding FOI/2026/09 and for identifying the catalogue references relating to Ty Mawr/Llandough within the Bute Estate collections. —————— Iwan ap Dafydd Jul 20 2026, 05:10PM via System Dear Sion Buckler, Attached is the response to your recent Freedom of Information request. I seek all recorded information held concerning furniture, furnishings, antiques, fixtures, heirlooms and other movable property originating from Great House Farm (Ty Mawr), Llandough, including any and all items we received from Bute Estate, Cardiff Castle, Cardiff Council.  Weather it be museums, archives or any other public body. I know museums have artifacts from our land in Llandough.  Specifically, I request copies of all: -Inventories, catalogues and asset registers. -Acquisition, disposal, loan and transfer records. -Provenance files and ownership records. -Photographs of items identified as originating from Great House Farm. -Correspondence concerning the identification, recovery, ownership or location of such items. -Internal reports, legal advice and memoranda relating to Great House Farm furniture or household effects. -Correspondence mentioning the Buckler or Williams families in connection with these items. -Records concerning any efforts by Cardiff Council or Cardiff Castle to trace, recover or secure items believed to have originated from Great House Farm. -Correspondence with the Bute Estate, museums, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest (RCEWA), Arts Council England or any other public authority regarding objects from Great House Farm. For context, I am allegeing that my family was unlawfully dispossessed of Great House Farm through fraud, and that furniture and other historic possessions belonging to the family were consequently dispersed. It’s possible the bailiffs from BP were also SAS soldiers. We are still gathering actionable intelligence.  I appreciate that the Freedom of Information Act does not require the authority to determine the merits of that allegation. However, it is directly relevant to understanding why I seek the recorded information. I am currently developing a full-scale replica of Great House Farm in Patagonia, Argentina as a museum dedicated to preserving the history of the house, its occupants and its contents. Should records identify surviving items from the farm, whether held by Cardiff Council, Cardiff Castle, museums or other public institutions, I intend to pursue their lawful return or transfer so they may ultimately be reunited with the reconstructed Great House Farm museum. This statement is provided solely as context for my request and does not seek a determination under the Freedom of Information Act. Dear Dr Roberts, Thank you for the detailed internal review outcome of FOI/2026/09 dated 29 July 2026. I note the clarification of the searches undertaken (including Bute Estate series D153, D205 and D219), the rationale for limiting terms to the property name, and the application of section 21 to the publicly accessible catalogue and Reading Room material. This closes the internal review from my side. I will proceed via the Library’s normal catalogue and Reading Room services for the identified estate records. Dear Dr Roberts, Thank you for your response and for confirming the internal review outcome. I acknowledge the clarification provided regarding the searches undertaken, including reference to the Bute Estate series D153, D205 and D219, and the application of section 21 in relation to publicly accessible catalogue material. However, I would like to clarify one remaining point for the record. My concern throughout this request has not been whether the Library holds physical furniture or objects as collection items. My request was specifically for recorded information relating to furniture, furnishings, fixtures, household effects and movable property connected with Great House Farm (Ty Mawr), Llandough. The questions I sought answers to were therefore about the existence of records such as inventories, valuations, estate correspondence, fixture records, transfers, disposals, provenance information and references within relevant archival collections. To avoid any misunderstanding, could you please confirm specifically: 1. Whether the Bute Estate series D153, D205 and D219 were searched only for references to the property name (for example “Ty Mawr”, “Great House Farm” or “Llandough”), or whether searches were also undertaken for related terms such as: – inventory; – valuation; – contents; – furniture; – furnishings; – fixtures; – household effects; – sale; – transfer; – disposal. 2. Whether any archival collections other than the identified Bute Estate series were considered relevant and searched. 3. Whether the Library holds, or has confirmed it does not hold, any: – household inventories; – estate valuations; – tenant records; – correspondence regarding contents or fixtures; – records of removal, disposal or transfer of items; – photographs or descriptions of household contents connected with Ty Mawr/Llandough. 4. If no such records were identified, please confirm that this conclusion is based on searches undertaken across the relevant archival collections, rather than solely on the absence of catalogue descriptions containing the property name. I appreciate that archival catalogues do not always describe individual items or subjects in detail. However, the purpose of this clarification is to establish precisely what searches were undertaken and what records were considered, so that there is a clear and accurate record of the Library’s position. I am grateful for the assistance provided so far and would appreciate a specific response to each point above. Kind regards, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] [quoted text trimmed]
M21 · 27 Sep 2026 04:15 UTC · Sion Buckler · Research enquiry — Bute Estate records GB 0210 BUTE / D153 / D219: Great House Farm (Tŷ Mawr), Llandough-juxta-Penarth — 1877 split and 1916 tenancy
Enquiries Service The National Library of Wales I am researching the title history of Great House Farm (Tŷ Mawr), Llandough-juxta-Penarth, Glamorgan, adjoining St Dochdwy’s churchyard (approx. ST 167 733). Glamorgan Archives (Louise Hunt, ref. 2026/4097, 24 September 2026) has confirmed that the following references are yours, not theirs, and has directed me to you: 1. D153 — Deeds relating to premises in p. Llandough, co. Glam., comprising a dwelling house adjoining the churchyard, 1811 (D153/1–2), and land (D153 onwards, including items sometimes cited as D153/4–8). 2. D219 — Llandough manorial leases and agreements. 3. The main Bute Estate deposit, GB 0210 BUTE (deeds to 1937; Glamorgan / Cardiff rentals). I do not ask you to adjudicate title. I ask only whether the following instruments exist in your holdings, and for catalogue references, dates, parties, acreages, and whether a plan is attached. A. The 1877 division Does the Bute deposit contain a conveyance, agreement, or other instrument of about 1876–1877 by which the Marquess of Bute (or trustees) conveyed or contracted to convey the farmhouse, buildings and about 10 acres adjoining the churchyard at Llandough to Daniel Thomas (or Thomas and another), while retaining about 9 acres of agricultural land to the east? B. The 1916 agricultural tenancy Does the deposit contain a yearly agricultural tenancy, or counterpart, of 1916 from the Marquess of Bute to John Williams of Great House Farm, Llandough? If yes: – does the parcels clause describe the whole farm, or only the land Bute still owned after 1877? – is there a plan? – what acreage is stated? C. Rentals 1877–1936 for this farm Do Glamorgan / Cardiff / Llandough rentals in GB 0210 BUTE distinguish, after c.1877, between: – a house/buildings holding (Thomas / later Williams), and – a residual Bute field holding later passed to Western Ground Rents in 1938? D. Anything that would show the two holdings were treated as one unit again before 1938. Purpose. HM Land Registry first-registered titles WA231076 (30 November 1982) and WA240304 (23 February 1983; later amalgamated). The 1982/83 files treat the land as one farm. The family case is that Parcel A (house and about 10 acres) had already left Bute in 1877 and was not the land let in 1916, so the 1982 merged title cannot be the same unit as the 1916 tenancy. Your deeds and rentals are the estate-side evidence that can confirm or deny that. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] I would be grateful for: – catalogue references and a short description of any matching items; – whether copies can be supplied, and the cost; – if the 1916 tenancy is not in GB 0210 BUTE, any note of where Bute tenancy counterparts after 1910 were deposited. This is a new enquiry. It is not a repeat of FOI/2026/11. Glamorgan Archives hold the 1938–44 Western Ground Rents plan/rental book (D696) and have already answered on their own Bute material. –# Teipiwch eich ateb uwchben y llinell hon #– —————— Owain Roberts Sep 30 2026, 05:04PM via System Please refer to previous correspondence for details of the searches conducted on your behalf. —————— Sion Buckler Jul 30 2026, 04:27PM via Email Dear Dr Roberts, Thank you for your response and for confirming the internal review outcome. —————— Owain Roberts Jul 29 2026, 11:21AM via System Dear Sion Buckler, Please find attached the outcome of the internal review that you requested on the 20 July 2026. If any information is withheld, please identify each exemption relied upon and explain why it applies, including the outcome of any public interest test where required. If another public authority is more likely to hold the requested information, I would be grateful if you would transfer the request or advise me accordingly. Enquiries Service The National Library of Wales Follow-up to my research enquiry of 27 September 2026 (Bute Estate records GB 0210 BUTE / D153 / D219) Glamorgan Archives has told me (ref 2026/4274, 6 October 2026) that D153/1-8 are held by the Library and that I should ask you. This is a research enquiry, not a request for a reading-room booking. The property is Great House Farm / Ty Mawr, Llandough-juxta-Penarth (ST 168 733), adjoining St Dochdwy’s churchyard. It is not Great House Farm, Llandough near Cowbridge. Please would you check the full sequence D153/1-8, including endorsements, dockets and any attached plans, for any document dated c.1875-1880 relating to that property. The catalogue titles may not name the parties. I am looking for any agreement, lease, counterpart, award, conveyance or plan involving: – Daniel Thomas / D. Thomas & Son; – Llandough Limeworks; – John Williams or Thomas Williams; – the Bute Estate or the Trustees of the Marquess of Bute; – quarrying, minerals, lime, sidings, compensation or reparation; – the dwelling adjoining the churchyard (I note your catalogue entry for D153/1-2, 1811). If such an item exists, please give the exact reference, date, document type, parties as written, property description and acreage, whether a plan is attached, and whether a copy can be supplied and at what cost. If nothing in D153/1-8 matches, please say so, and say which other Bute series (including D219) you would check next. I have not yet had a substantive reply to my enquiry of 27 September; I would be grateful for a date by which I can expect one. Regards, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] Enquiries Service The National Library of Wales I am researching the title history of Great House Farm (Tŷ Mawr), Llandough-juxta-Penarth, Glamorgan, adjoining St Dochdwy’s churchyard (approx. I live in Patagonia and cannot visit Aberystwyth in person in the short term. I would be grateful for: – catalogue references and a short description of any matching items; – whether copies can be supplied, and the cost; – if the 1916 tenancy is not in GB 0210 BUTE, any note of where Bute tenancy counterparts after 1910 were deposited. This is a new enquiry. It is not a repeat of FOI/2026/11. Glamorgan Archives hold the 1938–44 Western Ground Rents plan/rental book (D696) and have already answered on their own Bute material. –# Teipiwch eich ateb uwchben y llinell hon #– —————— Beryl Evans Oct 14 2026, 10:18AM via System Please see my other reply today. Kind regards Beryl —————— Cwestiwn gwreiddiol Sep 27 2026, 05:12AM via Email Great House Farm, Llandough Sirs/ Ma’ams, I need to correct a date I have used in earlier correspondence about Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr, Llandough, titles WA231076 and WA240304. I had treated 1983 as the year the two titles were merged. That was wrong. HM Land Registry’s own letter of 23 March 2026 (Lisa Griffiths, ref N610CGV) separates the two acts. 1982–83 was first registration of two live titles, not a merger. 30 November 1982: application to first-register WA231076. The Court of Appeal later treated BP Properties Ltd as registered proprietors of “the farm” from November 1982. 23 February 1983: application to first-register a second title, WA240304. 26 March 1983: Mary Williams died. On the family’s case, notice of those applications did not reach us until after her death, while the family was in mourning. She had no window in which to object. The family was not in a position to use any window that arrived after that. Those two titles remained separate through first instance. 24 July 1986: Hollis J. Both titles were still live. The judgment language treats Great House Farm as one holding. It had not been one holding on the register. On the family’s case it had not been one holding since the 1877 split: Parcel A (house, buildings, garden/yard and about 10 acres, the Thomas/Williams line) and Parcel B (the eastern fields retained by Bute and later WGR/BP). 2 February 1987: application to amalgamate the two titles. WA240304 was then closed and registration continued under WA231076. That is the merge. It was made after the 1986 ruling and before the Court of Appeal gave judgment on 31 July 1987. So 1983 is silent first registration of a second title while Mary was still in Parcel A, or had only just died. 1987 is the administrative merger, carried out while the appeal was still open. This was not a dispute about a single land parcel that BP already owned. Mary was on Parcel A, which we say she owned, [wording updated at the author’s request, 19 Oct 2026] with occupation on that house parcel running in the family from at least 1667. BP, and WGR before it from 1949, were the neighbouring interest on Parcel B. From 1949 onwards the family’s case is that those neighbours ran a decades-long series of tenancy offers, “whole farm” wording, possession orders and the 1974 letters to make her occupation of her own parcel look permissive, and to make both parcels look like one estate they had acquired. They never produced a conveyance of Parcel A. What they had was an unfounded claim that her occupancy was permissive. Please treat any earlier letter from me that said the titles merged in 1983 as corrected by this email. The dates that matter are: 1982/83 — first registration of two titles, without the occupier being heard; 24 July 1986 — first-instance judgment describing one farm while two titles still stood; 2 February 1987 — amalgamation, before the appeal ended; 31 July 1987 — Court of Appeal. Freedom of Information / Enquiries Service, This is a new request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. It is outside the scope of FOI/2026/09 and its internal review, which concerned Bute series including D153 and D205 and the 1877 transaction. It is also separate from my enquiry of 27 September and follow-up of 10 October 2026 on D153/1–8. PLEASE NOTE: DUPLICATE PLACE AND FARM NAMES IN GLAMORGAN Glamorgan has two parishes called Llandough, and each had a farm called Great House. IN SCOPE: Llandough-juxta-Penarth (Llandough near Penarth and Cardiff), hundred of [removed]. Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr stood beside St Dochdwy’s church, approx. ST 168 733. OUT OF SCOPE: Llandough-juxta-Cowbridge (Llandough near Cowbridge), and the Great Houses at nearby Llandow and Aberthin. For example, “Manors of Llandough and St Mary Church” (Penrice and Margam Estate Records, 1619–1704) appears to be the Cowbridge Llandough; please confirm if you know otherwise. Please do not send or rely on records for the Cowbridge-area places. If an entry says only “Llandough” or “Great House” and the parish cannot be told, please say so rather than assume. Part 1 — S7, Survey of the lands of William Herbert, kt, dec., in the lordships or manors of [removed], Cogan, Llandough and others, January 1610. Please tell me: (a) Whether S7 contains an entry for Great House or any holding in Llandough-juxta-Penarth, and the folio. (b) The name of the holder or tenant recorded, the tenure (freehold, copyhold, leasehold) and any rent or acreage given. (c) Whether S7 is digitised or filmed, and the cost of a copy of only those folios. Part 2 — Cardiff MSS on Microfilm (CARDMFS), filmed 1980–1984. Glamorgan Archives (ref 2026/4097b) identified Bute X.6(12), abstracts of payments and receipts by the Bute trustees, 1877 (copy), at Cardiff Library. Please tell me: (a) Whether Bute X.6(12), or any Bute X.6 item, is on the CARDMFS microfilm, and the reel and frame reference. (b) If so, how I can obtain a copy of the entries relating to Llandough-juxta-Penarth or Daniel Thomas, and the cost. Part 3 — A lease of Great House said to date from 1667. Our understanding (not yet supported by a document) is that the Williams family took Great House, Llandough-juxta-Penarth, in 1667 on a lease for 999 years. Great House is described in published sources as a freehold of the Vaughan family from the 16th to the late 18th century, after which it came to the Bute estate. Please tell me whether the Bute Estate Records, including the Herbert and Windsor family papers within them, or any other NLW collection, hold: (a) Any lease, counterpart lease, assignment or enrolment, c.1660–1675, of Great House or any messuage in Llandough-juxta-Penarth, to any person named Williams, or for a term of 999 years (or any other long term). (b) Any later deed, abstract of title, schedule or rental that recites or refers to a lease of Great House for 999 years or for a long term. (c) The conveyance or other instrument by which the Bute estate (or the Windsor family before it) acquired Great House from the Vaughan family or its heirs, with its date and reference, and whether it recites any lease or tenancy then outstanding. (d) Any Vaughan of Llandough family papers, and where they are held if not at NLW. If you consider any of this reasonably accessible by other means under section 21, please say exactly where and how. Dear Ms Evans, Thank you for your reply of 14 October and for the catalogue and Virtual Reading Room links. I will search the Bute catalogue myself and book a session if I find candidate items. One point before that: my requests concern preservation as much as access. Several of the records in issue are unique 17th- and 19th-century items, and I am concerned that routine disposal, weeding or transfer could remove them before they can be examined. Please confirm that no Bute Estate Records relating to Llandough-juxta-Penarth, Great House / Tŷ Mawr, Daniel Thomas, John Williams, or the 1875–1880 transaction have been reported missing, withdrawn, transferred or disposed of, and that any relevant retention or disposal schedule will be applied with this correspondence in mind. If you hold any recorded information on the location or physical-check status of the 1610 Herbert survey S7 or Bute X.6(12) beyond the catalogue links already supplied, please state it.
