Docket (verbatim): “Mr Thomas Williams and The Ynysawdre Coal Co. Copy Agreement”.

Opening (reading): “Memorandum of Agreement made the 15th day of June 1878 Between Thomas Williams of Ynysawdre Farm near Bridgend in the County of Glamorgan Farmer … and the Ynysawdre Coal Company …”. He claimed for “losses and damages done to his Crops by smoke, soot and other combustion and also general inconvenience”, after the company “erected Works and deposited Tips” on parts of the farm.

Award (reading): umpire Edward David of Llandaff, July 1878: the company to pay Thomas Williams “Three hundred and thirty nine pounds two shillings and sixpence” (£339 2s 6d; “thirty nine” is an uncertain reading). Signature block: “For the Ynysawdre Coal Coke & Brick Co … Chairman”. The company was at Tondu, near Bridgend (NMRS).

Why it is listed: per Sion Buckler (voice note, 19 Oct 2026), a 1876–78 agreement with “Thomas Williams of Great House Farm” compensated by “a Cardiff brick-coke company”. This document is the probable source of that memory, and of the line “except once, in 1878” in Sion Buckler’s email to Cadw (Cadw correspondence). That link is an inference.

Proves: An 1878 smoke-damage award to a Thomas Williams of Ynysawdre Farm near Bridgend.

Does not prove: Anything about Great House Farm, Llandough, or a payment to the Williams family of Llandough. No fluoride is mentioned.
