Why this page exists: Two Bute farms stood in Llandough: Great House Farm (Tŷ Mawr) and Llandough Farm. Records for Llandough Farm are listed here so they are not mistaken for Great House Farm.

Records (verbatim where quoted)

  • 1841 tithe apportionment (National Library of Wales tithe records): Thomas Rees, tenant of Bute, about 141.5 acres; John Williams about 119.7 acres, yard beside the churchyard (EV-0215). That Rees’s holding was Llandough Farm is an inference, supported by the press below.
  • Cardiff Times, 17 Mar 1865: “Mr. Jenkin Rees, second son of Mr. Thomas Rees, Llandough Farm” (article)
  • Weekly Mail, 6 Nov 1886: Thomas Rees, aged 89, “removed … to Llandough Farm, which he rented from the Marquess of Bute, and which he held until his death” (article)
  • Evening Express, 22 Jun 1898: rick fire “at Llandough Farm, the property of Mr. Evan Rees” (article)
  • Evening Express, 1 Feb 1910: death “at Llandough Farm, Cardiff, Ann Rees” (notice)

The OS 25-inch map (National Library of Scotland georeferenced layer, c.1890s–1900s; edition not confirmed) names “Ty-mawr” north-west of the church and “Llandough Farm” to the south-east (map).

Cuts against / caution: Some newspapers call a John Williams “of Llandough Farm” (1895 and 1904: see EV-0224 and EV-0227), so the press mixed the two names. Weekly Mail, 28 Nov 1903, “son of Mr. William Williams, of Llandough Farm”, and Barry Dock News, 3 Apr 1914, “Mr. Jenkin Morgan Williams, Llandough Farm”, are unexplained.

Proves: The Rees family held a farm called Llandough Farm, rented from the Bute estate, from at least 1865 to 1910, separately named from John Williams’s Great House farm in the directories.

Does not prove: Exact boundaries of either farm, or anything about title.
