Quotation: “Date of notification: 1972, 1985 · National Grid Reference: ST 165739 · Site area: 5.5 ha · A mixed deciduous woodland adjacent to saltings of the River Ely in a valley overlying Triassic Marls and Rhaetic rocks which are locally exposed in cliffs beside a tidal creek.” Also: “This document is NOT a definitive legal version … If you require a full legal copy of the document please contact CCW in writing.” NRW boundary record: first_notified 1972; last_notified 1985-12-09; status Re-notified; area 5.36 ha.

Proves: A wood named Cwm Cydfin, Leckwith, was notified as an SSSI in 1972 and re-notified in 1985 (9 Dec 1985 per NRW’s boundary record). Its mapped extent is 5.36 ha around ST 165 739, beside the Ely saltings.

Does not prove: Who owned or occupied the wood in 1972 or 1985. Any link to Great House Farm, title WA735527, Forest of Cardiff or 1824 plan 19: overlap not established (see measurement below). That Cwm Cydfin Wood was part of the Cedfin / Tŷ Mawr holding: HYPOTHESIS (name match only; cycle E1 suggested tithe wood 266 / plan 19’s northern wood band, unmapped).

Measurement (Tab, 18 Oct 2026)

  • The SSSI boundary sits within three HM Land Registry INSPIRE freehold polygons: 16848054 (3.86 ha of the SSSI, 72%), 16859003 (0.85 ha, 16%) and 16878988 (0.61 ha, 11%). INSPIRE data carries no title numbers, so which titles these are is not known.
  • Nearest SSSI edge is about 220 m from INSPIRE polygon 16871105, the polygon containing the farmstead point used in cycle E1.
  • Not measurable: WA735527 (title plan not held), 1824 plan 19 and the tithe map (not georeferenced). Settling it needs the WA735527 title plan, or the title numbers for the three polygons above (HMLR map search).

Related public record (not about the farm)

Vale of Glamorgan Planning Committee, 13 Feb 2025, 2024/00060/FUL, Hillside Cottage, Leckwith Road (retention of imported soil and inert material). The officer report records NRW’s view that “a primary core woodland network extends from Leckwith Road in the North to Cwm Cydfin Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) woodland in the south”, that “the SSSI is located approximately 700m away from the site”, a landslip “in December 2022”, and that “the application documents state 65,000 tonnes and 6,500 tonnes” (figures queried, not settled). Minutes: “REFUSED”; reason 3 cites the Cwm Cydfin SSSI.
