Description
4. Provenance and where to check it
DOCUMENTED (press report). Catalogue no. GHF-E090-N12. Sections 1 to 4 record what the cutting is and says. Section 5 is the Wiki’s reading and is open to challenge. A press report is evidence of what a newspaper reported, not proof that its statements are true. Jump to: Evidence · Transcript · Description · Provenance · Interpretation.
- What it is: a short court report with a photograph of Mr Buckler. The caption spells the surname “Buckley”; the text spells it “Buckler”.
- Publication and date: neither is printed on the cutting. The text refers to a hearing “yesterday”, to events “last year” and to a further appearance on 3 February, so it was published in early 1989 before that date.
- People and bodies named: Billy Buckler; the Crown Prosecution Service; Mr Jeff Clarke (prosecuting); Barry magistrates court; BP Properties.
- What is reported: withdrawal of an allegation of threatening words and behaviour said to have been committed in Llandough on 29 April, because the summons was “out of time”; a further appearance on 3 February on charges of assault and wanton and furious driving at Great House Farm in November; residence in Penarth; a court order not to go within half a mile of the farm site.
- Image files: the repository file named above and Google Drive file Screenshot_20250617-171926. Transcribed on the Press Archive page (N12).
- Original newspaper: not yet identified. The South Wales Echo is held by the British Newspaper Archive for 1983 to 2005 (Findmypast title page for the South Wales Echo), and the Echo extracts in N15 include a report of 6 January 1989 on a change of bail conditions. That is a search lead only and does not identify this cutting’s newspaper.

AN ALLEGATION that South Wales farmer Billy Buckler used threatening words and behaviour at his former home last year was withdrawn by the Crown Prosecution Service at Barry magistrates court yesterday. Buckler, who lived at Great House Farm, Llandough, until it was demolished by the owners, BP Properties, in November last year, was alleged to have committed the offence in Llandough on April 29. Mr Jeff Clarke, prosecuting, told the court that the summons was now legally “out of time” and could not proceed. He was therefore withdrawing it. Buckler is due to appear in court again on February 3 to face charges of assault and wanton and furious driving at Great House Farm in November, last year. He is currently living at an address in Penarth and has been ordered by the court not to go within half a mile of the Great House Farm site. [Photo caption: Billy Buckley — summons was “out of time”.]
Interpretation and wider context
RECONSTRUCTION. Dating the chainsaw event. The withdrawn allegation relates to 29 April in Llandough “last year”. That is the date of the abandoned eviction attempt described in the chainsaw report (N07). Together with the April 1988 extracts in N15, this supports the Wiki’s correction that the chainsaw stand-off was in April 1988 and not on the possession of 30 November. It does not say what the threatening behaviour charged was.
What this does not show. The summons was withdrawn on timing, so the cutting records no finding of fact. It reports separate charges of assault and wanton and furious driving at the farm in November, with a hearing due on 3 February. The outcome is not in this cutting. Later Echo extracts in N15 mention bail conditions on charges of assault, criminal damage and wanton or furious driving (6 January 1989) and a plea of guilty reported on 23 March 1989, but those extracts are truncated and the full reports have not been obtained. The Wiki does not state outcomes it has not seen.
Discrepancy noted. This report places the demolition “in November last year”. Other reports place it in the early hours of 6 December 1988 (N11).

- Obtain the court register or reports for the 3 February 1989 hearing and the March 1989 proceedings.
