Description

4. Provenance and where to check it

DOCUMENTED (press report). Catalogue no. GHF-E090-N01. Sections 1 to 4 record what the cutting is and says. Section 5 is the Wiki’s reading and is open to challenge. A press report is evidence of what a newspaper reported, not proof that its statements are true. Jump to: Evidence · Transcript · Description · Provenance · Interpretation. 🕒

  • What it is: a short magistrates’ court report with no photograph.
  • Publication and date: neither is printed on the clipping. The text gives the date of the theft charged as 11 November 1891, so the report was published after that date.
  • People named: Robert Williams (mason’s labourer, the defendant); Mr John Williams of Great House Farm, Llandough (owner of the geese); magistrates Mr John Duncan and Mr J. S. Corbett; Sergeant Ferris (Cardiff Borough Police); Police-constable Morgan (county constabulary).
  • What is reported: the charge of stealing three geese; the sergeant’s evidence of seeing the defendant carrying geese in Clive-street, Grangetown; the arrest on leaving Cardiff Gaol; the reply “All right”; a remand to the following Monday at Penarth.

  • Image file: 2026-02-07_consortium-formal_notice_bpvsbuckler__en_v0-0-1_008.png in the datro repository wayback images folder. Transcribed on the Press Archive page (N01).
  • Origin of the clipping: catalogued as a British Newspaper Archive clipping. The newspaper title is not shown on it. It is described only as a Cardiff or Penarth newspaper. 🕒
  • Where to look for the dated page: Welsh Newspapers Online (National Library of Wales) is a free searchable archive of Welsh newspapers. Search for “Great House Farm” and the geese theft in November 1891 reports of the Penarth magistrates. The exact page has not yet been located, so no page link is given here.

LLANDOUGH. ALLEGED FARMYARD THEFT.—Robert Williams, a mason’s labourer, was on Tuesday charged (before Mr. John Duncan and Mr. J. S. Corbett) at the offices of the clerk to the Penarth magistrates, High-street, Cardiff, with stealing three geese, the property of Mr. John Williams, Great House Farm, Llandough, on November 11, 1891.—Sergeant Ferris, of the Cardiff Borough Police Force, deposed that he saw the prisoner early on the morning in question in Clive-street, Grangetown, carrying the geese on his back. He at once started after Williams, who dropped the geese and got away.—Police-constable Morgan, of the county constabulary, said he arrested the prisoner when he was leaving Cardiff Gaol on Monday. The prisoner, when charged with stealing the geese, replied, “All right.”—The prisoner was remanded until Monday at Penarth.

Interpretation and wider context

RECONSTRUCTION / UNRESOLVED. The cutting is independent contemporary evidence that a Mr John Williams was farming at Great House Farm, Llandough in November 1891. The John Williams page records that Mary (Nancy) Williams’s father, John Williams, took over the farm on his own father’s death in 1908. The John Williams of 1891 could therefore be that man or his father. The cutting does not say which. Until the two are distinguished from other records, this page does not equate them. 🕒

What it does not show. It does not show who owned the land or on what terms Mr Williams held it. It concerns a minor theft prosecution of a third party. Its value to the Wiki is as a dated, independent mention of the Williams family at the farm, which can be set beside the 1877 agreement and 1916 tenancy evidence. 🕒

  • Identify the newspaper, issue date and page.
  • Establish which John Williams is meant.
