1987 HMLR Amalgamation During Appeal

page · Updated 2026-09-26T21:24:42 · Original source

The Wiki records an important title-state event on 2 February 1987: an HM Land Registry amalgamation application appears in the title chronology while the BP v Buckler appeal process was still live.

Why the date matters

The High Court judgment was given in 1986 and the Court of Appeal heard the appeal in July 1987. The Wiki therefore keeps the title registers and the litigation chronology side-by-side rather than treating a later amalgamation as if it had always existed in the same form.

Questions for the record

  • What exactly did HMLR amalgamate, and which title plans controlled the application?
  • What was the legal and physical extent of each title immediately before amalgamation?
  • Were the court, parties or representatives notified of the title change while the appeal was pending?
  • Did the amalgamation alter only the register structure, or did it also appear to change how the disputed land was presented?
  • What documents existed on the HMLR file on 2 February 1987 and what happened to them later?

Important: a register amalgamation is an administrative title event. Its occurrence does not itself establish that the underlying documentary root of Parcel A was correct. The Wiki keeps those questions separate.
