Press and Archive Leads — October 2026
About this page type → Read the Docs
Scope and label rule: this page records leads and access references. Unless expressly stated otherwise, the underlying newspaper, card, will or archival record has not been independently inspected here. A catalogue or finding-aid reference is not proof of the contents of the underlying item.
1989 HER and demolition records
[PRESS REPORT; source lead: HER file GGAT02038s on Archwilio] South Wales Echo, 11 February 1989, p. 2, is reported as stating that the Vale authorised legal action against BP Properties; that a 13 December 1988 letter sent through Debenham Tewson had gone unanswered; and that an enforcement notice was being prepared. Obtain and compare the full newspaper page with the underlying HER file before treating every detail in the report as established.
[CATALOGUE ENTRY ONLY] The March 1989 SMR record card in the same HER file is described as stating “building destroyed by owners”. The original card and its authorship/context should be inspected. This is a record of what the card says, not by itself a determination of legal responsibility.
1958 press and public-record leads
[PRESS REPORT] Western Mail, 20 November 1958, p. 7, “It’s a Crichel Down, says woman farmer”. Obtain the complete page and confirm the identity, land and context before using it to connect any particular parcel to Great House Farm.
[PRESS REPORT] Western Mail, 7 May 1958, reporting the Leckwith Common hearing. [PRIMARY PUBLIC RECORD — verify original Hansard text] Hansard, 25 November 1958, is cited for the proposition that no petition was lodged. [CATALOGUE ENTRY ONLY] TNA BD 11/3775 is a further archival reference to examine. These items concern a separate Leckwith Common question; any connection to Parcel A is a hypothesis until the persons, land and transaction are matched.
Bute will and 1905 conveyance — unresolved identity/title test
[PRESS REPORT / original will not yet inspected] The 3rd Marquess of Bute’s will, dated 30 July 1894 and reported in October 1900, is said to leave Llandough and Leckwith to Lord Colum Crichton-Stuart. Obtain the will or a reliable probate copy before relying on that description.
[CATALOGUE ENTRY ONLY until the deed is obtained] The decisive cross-check is the conveyance dated 23 February 1905 filed or referred to on HMLR title WA231076. Obtain its full text, parties, schedule and plan; compare them to the will and mapped parcels. Whether the will’s disposition and the 1905 conveyance affect the land claimed as Parcel A remains an open question.

- [PRESS REPORT] Western Mail, 20 Nov 1958, p.7: “Mrs. M D. Buckler”, of Ty Mawr, Penarth Road, Llandough, told Glamorgan County Council’s planning committee on 19 Nov 1958 that Glamorgan County Council, Penarth Urban and Cardiff Rural Councils and Western Ground Rents “have walked in and taken” the land; that WGR let sites “over her head” (one used by Penarth Urban Council as a rubbish tip); that her water was cut off for nearly 10 years; and that she lost a complete herd of Friesian cattle. Western Mail, 7 May 1958, p.7, names her “Mrs. Mary Doreen Buckler, of Great House Farm, Llandough”.

DB/M/22 is described in the catalogue as correspondence, accounts, rent statements and schedules of manorial property, rents and common land for the Mountjoy disposals of 1950–57; the entry does not name the manors.
- [PRIMARY (record card)] The March 1989 SMR record card (“building destroyed by owners”) has been read in the HER file GGAT02038s on Archwilio; what has not been read is any underlying council or BP correspondence behind it.
