2026/0672 Dear Sion Buckler. Thank you for your email, received on 9 February, and for outlining within it your concerns, which we have noted. Glamorgan Archives holds only the records that we have been given. We cannot make any assumptions as to whether the content of those records is accurate. And we have a duty to preserve the records which are presented to us as they are presented to us. In addition, Glamorgan Archives has an income target and, as such, we aren’t in a position to provide free copies of material in our care. Yours sincerely, Rhian Diggins ] Uwch Archifydd / Senior Archivist Archifau Morgannwg / Glamorgan Archives [signature block trimmed] [quoted text trimmed]
M07 · 18 Feb 2026 16:52 UTC · Sion Buckler · Re: Epexio contact us form submission
Dear Ms Diggins, Thank you for your reply and for clarifying Glamorgan Archives’ position regarding access and charges for copies of material. I appreciate the work you do in preserving the records entrusted to your care. I would like to reiterate that my correspondence is not a routine request for private research access. Rather, it is a formal expression of concern regarding the potential historical misdescription or suppression of facts relating to Great House Farm, Llandough, including heritage and archaeological records. My concern is about the accuracy and completeness of the archival record itself, rather than the provision of copies or personal research access. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] my intention is not to request material for private use, but to highlight potential issues with public record integrity. I would therefore be grateful if you could advise which department, officer, or public body I should contact to formally raise concerns regarding historical misrepresentation within public records or archival descriptions, so that these matters may be properly examined. For the avoidance of doubt, I am not alleging any impropriety on the part of current archive staff. My concern relates solely to historical processes and record-keeping. Thank you very much for your time and consideration, and I would be grateful for any guidance you can provide. Yours sincerely, *Sion Buckler* [quoted text trimmed]

Dear Sion Buckler. Thank you for your email. Can I suggest that you contact the National Archives<https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/>? They hold responsibility for public records in England and Wales and may be best placed to advise you. M09 · 19 Feb 2026 10:34 UTC · Sion Buckler · Re: Epexio contact us form submission
Dear Ms Diggins, I would be grateful for clarification on a specific point. It has long been understood within my family that an index card existed referring to the title deeds of Great House Farm, Llandough. While the deeds themselves reportedly went missing, the index reference was said to remain at one time. My question is simply this: If an index card or catalogue entry once existed within Glamorgan Archives (or its predecessor systems), would a record of that entry survive following digitisation, even if the underlying document was withdrawn, transferred, or missing? In other words, are superseded or removed catalogue references retained within archival metadata systems? I am not alleging wrongdoing. I am trying to establish whether any trace of such an index entry would ordinarily remain within your records management framework. Yours sincerely, Sion Buckler [quoted text trimmed]

2026/0859 Dear Mr Buckler. Thank you for your email. Glamorgan Archives had at one time a large number of paper catalogues, along with card indexes. The data from these was transferred into our catalogue when we moved from analogue to digital. The original catalogues and cards were not retained. Our catalogue only records descriptions of documents that are held within our collection. If a document is permanently withdrawn from the collection, we would remove the description from the catalogue. Many of our records are private records held on deposit on behalf of the owner. We have no control over what they do or don’t give us. The owner retains the right to withdraw these documents if they wish. Yours sincerely, Rhian Diggins ] Uwch Archifydd / Senior Archivist Archifau Morgannwg / Glamorgan Archives [signature block trimmed] [quoted text trimmed]

Dear Mr Buckler. Thank you for your email. If items are withdrawn from the collection, a record will be kept on file here at the Archives recording when the item was withdrawn and who withdrew it. I hope this is of help. Yours sincerely, Rhian Diggins ] Uwch Archifydd / Senior Archivist Archifau Morgannwg / Glamorgan Archives [signature block trimmed] [quoted text trimmed]
M12 · 11 Apr 2026 19:05 UTC · Sion Buckler · Cardiff County Court 1974 – Request for Administrative Case Records
Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to enquire about historical records from Cardiff County Court held at Glamorgan Archives. The Ministry of Justice has confirmed that, under the Public Records Act, older county court records selected for permanent preservation are transferred to Glamorgan Archives and that you are the place of deposit for Cardiff County Court records. I am seeking administrative and procedural records relating to civil proceedings heard at Cardiff County Court in 1974, concerning: Court: Cardiff County Court (or relevant South Glamorgan county court) Approximate hearing dates: one hearing in July 1974 and another listed on or around 30–31 October 1974 Case type: civil proceedings involving [insert parties / brief description if you are comfortable – this will help them identify the case] I am not seeking the full case file, pleadings, evidence or transcripts. I am specifically interested in: Any surviving case register / ledger / minute book / index entries for this case (showing case number, procedural steps and closure status). Court listing / Daily Cause List entries for the July 1974 hearing and the hearing listed on or around 30–31 October 1974, including any outcome annotations (e.g. adjourned, withdrawn, vacated, stood out). Any record confirming the administrative outcome of the proceedings (adjourned, stayed, withdrawn, discontinued, or determined). Any record confirming whether a final judgment, possession order or declaration of title was sealed or entered in respect of these proceedings. If possible, please could you: Confirm whether you hold records that are likely to contain this information. Advise what information you would need from me to locate the relevant entries (for example, names of the parties, known addresses, or any other identifiers). Let me know the procedure and any fees for obtaining digital copies or images of the relevant register entries or cause lists, if they are available. I am happy to provide further details (names of parties, addresses, etc.) by reply if that would assist you in identifying the correct case. Thank you very much for your assistance. Yours faithfully, Sion Buckler

Ref: 2026/1708 Dear Sion Buckler, Thank you for your email received into our enquiries system 13th April. There is a gap in the cause registers we hold for Cardiff County Court so the only record that has been transferred to us that covers 1974 is a funds ledger (document reference ACA/8/2)<https://canfod.glamarchives.gov.uk/en/records/ACA/8/2>. This ledger records payments made in relation to County Court orders for periodical payments. I am not sure whether this ledger would be of any relevance to your search but should make you aware that as some of the orders relate to infants, access to this ledger would be restricted in accordance with data protection legislation. If you can provide us with a bit more information about the case that you are seeking information on we will be happy to advise further. We hope that this information is of use to you. M16 · 28 May 2026 20:50 UTC · Sion Buckler · Re: Great House Farm, Llandough, Nr Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan
Thanks Katie, [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] Any assistance appreciated. I believe my disabled widow nan inherited the fee simple absolute (and Manorial) title from the Marquess of Bute, a deal family before us made with Daniel Thomas and the Marquess of Bute. I believe Marconi staying with us while inventing the radio or boxer ‘Peerless’ Jim Driscoll fighting his first boxing match at our barns, or when we did a tree planting ceremony (customary when obtaining land) with the whole town there to witness and photo evidence in the nations collection of wales, it was because we’d become the absolute and manorial title holders. My nan maintained this position in all court proceedings and in the local press. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] It appears her title was stolen and ended up in the hands of Western Ground Rents and later BP who bought it from them. Who then tried and failed to get my widow pensioner nan to play the role of her tenant and pay them. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] So if you could kindly do everything in your power to assist, so that this matter is put to rest I’d appreciate. Regards, Sion [quoted text trimmed]

M18 · 29 May 2026 18:48 UTC · Sion Buckler · FORMAL DISCLOSURE NOTICE & LITIGATION HOLD: Historic Significance, Planning Approvals, and Displaced Family Tenancy Records for Great House Farm, Llandough (FOIA/EIR Request)
[personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] *[personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] You are under a strict legal duty to preserve all physical and electronic records, metadata, correspondence, maps, and erased files relating to this site. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]* Dear Freedom of Information Officer, RE: Information Request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 I am writing to request access to historical records, internal correspondence, planning briefs, and assessments held by your organization regarding Great House Farm, Llandough, near Penarth/Cardiff (demolished December 1988), and the historical occupancy of the Buckler family. Statutory Mandate on Accessibility & Charging Fees: I am aware that previous attempts to locate this data have resulted in directives to visit physical archives in person or use paywalled, commercial third-party web portals. Please be advised of the following statutory obligations: 1. Under EIR Regulation 8, fees cannot act as an unreasonable barrier or deterrent to access. Because my family was historically displaced from this site and I am executing this request remotely, forcing physical attendance or demanding payment constitutes an unlawful obstacle. 2. Public authorities are required to supply information in the format requested. I require all documents to be delivered digitally via email attachment or secure electronic download link, free of charge, as specified by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) guidelines for data already held electronically. Please provide all recorded information matching the following points: 1. Tenant/Ownership Identification and the 1880 Report – Any documents, archival notes, or registry indexes citing the William/ Buckler family line (who occupied and farmed the house across four generations). – Clarification on whether my family members were formally cited as the legal owners, long-term tenants, or registered reporters of the 1880 discovery under the dining room floor. – Any explicit records indicating gaps, deleted metadata, or missing volumes in your authority’s archive concerning the tenancy, land-dispute maps, or agricultural heritage of Great House Farm between 1950 and 1989. 2. Statutory Protection and Cadw’s Assessments – Given that the site’s extreme archaeological value (a 1st-to-4th-century Roman precursor villa and a massive early medieval monastic settlement) was verified by rescue operations as early as 1979, what are the recorded reasons why Cadw failed to place a statutory Schedule or Protection Order on the standing fabric of Great House Farm before its demolition? – All internal correspondence, risk assessments, or ministerial briefs evaluating the preservation value of the sub-medieval direct-entry farmhouse core before it was levelled. 3. Planning Approvals and Local Authority Governance – All minutes, planning committee files, and consultation responses from the local authority that granted planning permission and housing development rights on this specific acreage. – Direct information explaining how the council approved planning permission for a private housing development in light of the documented historical evidence surrounding the immediate parish boundary. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] – Records showing exactly where and at what stage of the planning process this archaeological evidence should have been brought up but was not, which ultimately allowed developers and public bodies to claim they were unaware of the land’s deep significance until after the farmhouse was destroyed and housing development began. – Any environmental impact assessments, historic environment register (HER) lookups, or developer briefs filed between 1980 and 1990 regarding the footprint of Great House Farm. If any part of this request is refused under the guise of commercial sensitivity or archival limitations, you are required by law to state the exact statutory exemption applied and provide a formal internal review pathway. I expect your response within the statutory 20-working-day timeframe. Kind regards, *Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]*

Dear Hannah, Thank you for your detailed reply and for identifying the records relating to Great House Farm and the Buckler family. Having reviewed the descriptions, I am not yet certain that the 1938 Great House Farm sale catalogue relates to the same Great House Farm, Llandough that later became the subject of the BP litigation involving the Buckler family. I will investigate this further. My current research is focused on the ownership, occupation and legal history of Great House Farm, Llandough, particularly during the twentieth century and in connection with BP Properties, BP Pension Trust, tenancy arrangements, conveyancing, planning matters and any records that may help establish the chain of title. 1800/1900’s too. Could you please advise whether Glamorgan Archives holds, or is aware of, any records relating to: – BP Properties Ltd; – BP Pension Trust; – Great House Farm, Llandough (near Penarth); – conveyances, tenancy agreements or estate management records concerning the property; – planning applications, redevelopment proposals or demolition records relating to Great House Farm; – correspondence between public bodies and the owners or occupiers of the property; – any records that may assist in tracing ownership or occupation between the 1870s and the late 1980s. I would also be grateful if you could advise whether any estate maps, tithe maps, valuation records, rating records or other archival sources might help establish the historical ownership and occupation of the property. Thank you again for your assistance. Your reply was meaningful and appreciated. Kind regards, Sion Buckler [quoted text trimmed]

David, Bore Da / Good Morning, Will do. And thanks for your prompt reply. Please also clarify whether any searches were undertaken beyond deeds and title documents, as my enquiry extends to a wider range of historical materials relating to Great House Farm (Ty Mawr), Llandough. Family records and longstanding local accounts indicate that a copy of the conveyance or land transfer associated with Daniel Thomas and the Bute Estate may at one time have been available through Cardiff’s library or local studies collections. The Williams family relied upon documentary evidence relating to the farm during disputes concerning occupation and ownership during the twentieth century, and family members consistently referred to such records. I therefore respectfully request that Cathays Branch and Heritage Library, or the appropriate Cardiff Council department, undertake or arrange a search of any relevant holdings, including: • Local studies collections and vertical files. • Heritage and local history indexes. • Newspaper cuttings collections. • Photographic collections. • Map collections. • Catalogue entries and accession records. • References to Great House Farm, Ty Mawr, Llandough. • References to Daniel Thomas, the Bute Estate, quarry agreements, land exchanges, or conveyances. • References to John Williams, Mary Williams, or other members of the Williams family associated with the farm. • Records indicating whether any such material was transferred to Glamorgan Archives or another repository. In particular, if any relevant material was formerly held by Cardiff Libraries or Cardiff Council but subsequently transferred, withdrawn, re-catalogued, or otherwise relocated, I would be grateful for any information identifying where those records are now held and any catalogue references that may assist my research. If this request would be more appropriately handled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 or Environmental Information Regulations 2004, please treat it accordingly or transfer it internally to the relevant department. The purpose of my enquiry is to identify surviving historical records relating to Great House Farm and the Williams family’s connection to the property. Any guidance, references, finding aids, catalogue entries, or archive references would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to hearing from you. Hi Sion, based on the information you provided, I couldn’t find any relevant materials among the documents held at Cardiff Central Library. I searched for Great Farm House, Llandough, and Daniel Thomas, but found no matches with your query. I’m afraid last name Williams is too popular to conduct any research without further details – first names, titles, etc. You mention that some files are “referenced in quarry deal histories” – would you be able to send us the exact references? They could possibly include a document/manuscript number that could help locating any materials in question. Lastly, I had a brief look at materials held by our partner, Glamorgan Archives. One of the records that came up is the below: I think it would be worth contacting them (Contact – Glamorgan Archives<https://glamarchives.gov.uk/contact/>) and asking if they have any more documents relating to the house. Dear Monika, Thank you for taking the time to search the Cardiff Central Library collections and for your helpful reply. I appreciate that “Williams” is far too common a surname to search effectively without further information. The family associated with Great House Farm (Ty Mawr), Llandough, included Mary Doreen Williams (died 1983), her father John Williams, and later her son, my father William Buckler and his wife, my mum; Branwen Buckler. The property was historically known as Great House Farm or Ty Mawr and stood in Llandough near Cardiff. The reference to Daniel Thomas comes from historical accounts of the quarrying and land transactions affecting the estate. My understanding is that there was a conveyance or land exchange involving Daniel Thomas and the Bute Estate which has been referenced in later histories of the area. Unfortunately I do not yet have a deed reference number, which is one of the reasons I am trying to trace the original records. I am particularly interested in: • Any references to Great House Farm / Ty Mawr, Llandough. • Estate records relating to the Bute Estate and Daniel Thomas. • Local history files, newspaper cuttings, photographs or manuscripts relating to the Williams family of Great House Farm. • Material relating to the historic house, farm, manor, coach house, estate, quarrying activities, or later demolition. Thank you also for directing me to Glamorgan Archives. I have been making enquiries there and will continue to do so. If any estate maps, local history files, manuscript collections, newspaper indexes, parish material, or catalogues come to mind which may contain references to Great House Farm, I would be very grateful for any further suggestions. Thank you again for your assistance. Kind regards, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] [quoted text trimmed]

This involved a detailed pc records enquiry of our heritage catalogue, a physical search on the Biographical records we hold, and a query of all records we have regarding transfers of material. With regard to Great House Farm (Ty Mawr) all I could find was an extract in the South Wales Spectator October 1974 (page 58) which was one page written by A.L.Ducie on his visit to the property. Also relevant: connections to *Western Ground Rents Limited*, *Bute Estate*, or *BP Pension Trust* / predecessors in the 1969–1980s period. Dear Information Rights / Archives Team, I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (or equivalent records access) regarding my grandfather, Mr. Williams, who worked in the engineering department of the Cardiff Post Office / General Post Office around 1897. Specifically, I seek any records, personnel files, correspondence, reports, or mentions confirming his involvement in Guglielmo Marconi’s wireless telegraphy experiments at Lavernock Point (including erecting the 120-foot pole and related tests to Flat Holm). This relates to contemporary newspaper reports from May 1897. Please provide: – Any personnel or service records for Mr. Williams in the Cardiff engineering department circa 1897. – Documents referencing “Mr. Williams” in connection with Marconi’s demonstrations. – Any other relevant historical files from the GPO telegraph/engineering teams. Grandson I am ultimately seeking any record about my great grandfather Mr Williams of Great House Farm, Llandough, Cardiff (formerly Vale of Glamorgan). Not to be confused with Great House Farm, Llandough, Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan. And his role in the Marconi experiment. And before and after Marconis stay with our family in our home in 1897. I am happy to provide further identification if required. Thank you for your assistance. Best regards, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]

Dear Information Governance Team, Thank you for your response. To whom am I speaking? I note your advice that Glamorgan Archives may be the appropriate repository for historic material. I will contact Glamorgan Archives separately. However, I would like to clarify that my request was not limited to deposited historical archive material. My request concerns any recorded information held by Cardiff Council and its predecessor authorities relating to Great House Farm, Llandough (Ty Mawr), including operational records created or retained by the Council. Please confirm: Which Cardiff Council departments were consulted before reaching the conclusion that Glamorgan Archives was the appropriate route; Whether searches were carried out within: – Planning records; – Building Control records; – Legal Services records; – Estates/property records; – Highways records; – Environmental/archaeology records; – Records inherited from former Glamorgan County Council or South Glamorgan County Council; – Whether the following search terms were used: “Great House Farm” “Ty Mawr” “Llandough” “Buckler” “Williams” “BP Properties” “BP Pension Trust” “Western Ground Rents” Whether Cardiff Council holds any records relating to: – the demolition of Great House Farm around 1988; – planning and development of the replacement housing; – any inspections, surveys, photographs or reports concerning the site; – correspondence with BP, their representatives, the Buckler/Williams family, Cadw, archaeological bodies or other public authorities. I appreciate Glamorgan Archives may hold historic deposited collections. However, an archive referral does not confirm whether Cardiff Council itself holds related administrative records, and I would therefore be grateful for confirmation of the searches undertaken before this request is redirected. Given the age and significance of the records concerned, I would appreciate this clarification at your earliest convenience. Dear Chris, Thank you for confirming that FOI25766 is already open. Please treat my email of 20 July as a clarification and continuation of FOI25766 rather than as a new FOI request. I do not wish to open a separate request. I appreciate that Glamorgan Archives may hold historical archive material relating to 1897. However, the clarification I submitted relates to whether Cardiff Council, including any predecessor authorities, holds recorded information created or retained in the course of its own functions. Accordingly, I would be grateful if FOI25766 could address the points raised in my email of 20 July, including confirmation of: – which Council departments were consulted; – what searches were undertaken; – whether Cardiff Council holds any records within the scope of that request; and – whether any relevant records have been transferred to Glamorgan Archives. Thank you for your assistance, and I look forward to your response under FOI25766. Kind regards, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] [quoted text trimmed]

However, my request was broader than personnel records alone. I was also seeking any historical records held by Glamorgan Archives relating to: – Cardiff Post Office / General Post Office engineering activities around 1897; – the Marconi wireless telegraphy experiments at Lavernock Point and tests to Flat Holm; – correspondence, reports, photographs, deposited collections or other references mentioning the Cardiff engineering team or “Mr Williams” in connection with these events. Could you please confirm whether Glamorgan Archives has searched its catalogues or collections for these broader categories of records, rather than only employee records? Ms Diggins, Thank you for your email and for clarifying that Glamorgan Archives does not hold records relating to engineering activities at Cardiff Post Office, Marconi’s experiments at Lavernock Point, or connections between the Cardiff Post Office engineering team, Mr Williams and those events. However, I would be grateful for some further clarification regarding the searches undertaken, as I am trying to establish the extent of the records searched rather than simply whether records were found. Your response states that you searched “our catalogue”. Could you please clarify: 1. Does “our catalogue” refer only to publicly catalogued collections, or were uncatalogued, partially catalogued and recently accessioned collections also considered? 2. Which search terms were used? For example, were searches undertaken for “Marconi”, “Lavernock”, “Flat Holm”, “Cardiff Post Office”, “General Post Office”, “wireless”, “telegraph”, “Williams”, “Great House Farm”, “Ty Mawr”, “Tŷ Mawr”, “Llandough” and any obvious variants? 3. Were deposited collections from Cardiff Corporation, Cardiff Council, local organisations, engineering companies, private estates, or other archival deposits searched where relevant? 4. Were photographic collections, maps, correspondence files, accession records, depositor files, subject indexes or other finding aids examined, or was the search limited to catalogue descriptions? 5. Are there any uncatalogued, restricted or unindexed collections that were not searched as part of responding to my enquiry? 6. Has Glamorgan Archives ever held records within the scope of my request that have since been transferred to another repository, returned to a depositor or otherwise disposed of? I appreciate that an archive can only confirm what it currently holds. 2026/3217 Dear Mr Buckler. Thank you for your email, received into our post system on 23 July 2026. I can confirm that all the terms listed in your email have been used to search our catalogue. You are welcome to replicate these searches yourself on our catalogue https://canfod.glamarchives.gov.uk/en/ We conducted our searches using the staff interface to our collections management system, which searches across our catalogue and our accessions database, which is in turn linked to our depositors database. It will therefore pick up any material received, but as yet uncatalogued, which could potentially be relevant. This system includes all our collections including deposits from Cardiff Corporation, Cardiff Council, local organisations, engineering companies, and private estates. As I noted, no relevant results were returned. Our searches were conducted using free text search of our descriptions. We do not have a subject index to our holdings. We do not hold any other finding aids apart from our catalogue. We do not have any record of any potentially relevant material having been transferred elsewhere. I hope this clarifies the situation for you. Yours sincerely, Rhian Diggins ] Uwch Archifydd / Senior Archivist Archifau Morgannwg / Glamorgan Archives [signature block trimmed] [quoted text trimmed]

Dear Ms Diggins, Thank you for your email. I realise that I made a mistake in my previous email. I inadvertently referred to records “held by the National Library of Wales”, when I intended to enquire about material held by Glamorgan Archives. A member of my family has scheduled a visit to the Search Room tomorrow to research Great House Farm (Ty Mawr/Cedfin/Cydfin), Llandough, and our Williams and Buckler family history. If possible, I would be very grateful if the following material could be prepared in advance. I appreciate that some references below may relate to connected collections or require confirmation of the correct repository. Where a reference is not held by Glamorgan Archives, we would be grateful if you could advise whether you hold any related material, copies, cross-references or catalogue information, or direct us to the appropriate repository. The records requested are as follows: – DB/E/1–2 – David Stewart survey of the Marquess of Bute’s Glamorgan estates, including Great House Farm alias Cedfin, Llandough, together with any related maps or accompanying material. – D160/1–4 – Agreements between Lambert Williams and the Bute Estate (1818–1835). – Any copies, related material or cross-references connected with NLW D219 (Llandough manorial leases and agreements, including Ty Mawr/Cydfin references). – D153/4–8 – Records relating to the 1876 severance of land formerly part of Great House Farm for Llandough Limeworks, including associated plans. – DSA/6/701 – Parts of the Llandough Estate, 9 October 1924. – DSA/6/1158 – Great House Farm, Llandough, 15 November 1938, including sale particulars, plans and associated papers. – GD/LA/15/255 – Great House Farm sale particulars (1938), if held. – DXJF/64/27–32, including DXJF/64/30–32 – Nancy Buckler / Nancy Buckler Williams sketch and notes of the former layout of Llandough. – DCOWHS material containing references to the Buckler family. – DBDT catalogue reference relating to the July 1877 counterpart lease from the Trustees of the late Marquess of Bute to John Williams, if held. – Cardiff Rural District Council records relating to Great House Farm or Ty Mawr. – CVG/C/1/52. – DCVG/PL planning records relating to Great House Farm, demolition, redevelopment or Church View Close. – Any relevant DRA records, including DRA 418–420 or DRA 5/31. – UDPE/S/1/68 – Original four plans and accompanying documents. – Any estate maps, sale plans, surveys, tithe maps, OS maps or boundary plans showing Great House Farm/Ty Mawr. – Any records relating to Western Ground Rents Ltd, Mountjoy Ltd, BP Pension Trust Ltd, BP Properties Ltd, or any leases, conveyances, rent books, tenancy agreements, possession records or related correspondence concerning Great House Farm and the Williams/Buckler family. If any of the above records contain associated bundles, schedules, enclosures, oversized plans or documents stored separately from the principal reference, we would be grateful if these could also be identified. We would also appreciate advice as to whether Glamorgan Archives holds any uncatalogued or recently deposited material relating to Great House Farm, Ty Mawr, the above families, or the ownership and occupation history of the site between 1875 and 1988. My reader’s ticket number is *[removed]. Thank you very much for your assistance. Kind regards, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] [quoted text trimmed]

Diolch Rhian, [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] So for our private study and research of our family land, former home and history, we require photos be permitted to be taken, of artifacts of interest, so they may be sent to me here. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] We’re also trying to understand the unresolved and ongoing ownership dispute between our family and BP, who were awarded possession of our farm and home since 1667, which resulted in us being dispossessed of our ancestral birthland as children in 1988. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] The MP for Cardiff covering Llandough responded yesterday and is now aware of the queries and concerns I’m raising with the case and we appreciate your cooperation and service and thank you in advance. Subject to me viewing the records, it’s possible I may be warranted in proceeding with a Senedd public enquiry request, as this could be a matter of public interest. No single centralised chronology with all supporting evidence appears to exist for our land, family and former home and it’s history and herritage. And so this is the purposeful and meaningful work I have chosen to undertake. Fascinately world champion boxer Peerless Jim fought his first fight in our barns. Marconi stayed with us while inventing radio. The house was a court house and stood on a Roman villa and monestry. It’s a trove of hidden history. Kind regards, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] [quoted text trimmed]

King’s Counsel, I am writing to seek a preliminary view on a substantial body of historical land material relating to Great House Farm (Ty Mawr), Llandough. Over the past year I have begun a detailed review of primary sources, archive material, Land Registry records, Freedom of Information responses, contemporary press reports, and surviving legal documentation relating to the property and the possession proceedings that culminated in the Court of Appeal judgment in 1987 and the subsequent eviction in 1988. The starting point for this research was the concern of us former occupants, the Williams/Buckler family, that the litigation determined possession only and did not constitute a final judicial examination of the underlying root of title. Our family’s position has consistently been that their occupation derived from a long hereditary connection with the property extending back several centuries, and that the central question of ownership was never fully tried. The material gathered to date raises a number of issues that appear to warrant independent legal examination, including: – whether the 1974 licence relied upon in the possession proceedings remained legally effective after the [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] death of my nan Mary Doreen Williams in 1983; – whether successive possession proceedings determined only occupation and possession, rather than the underlying proprietary title; – whether the documentary title relied upon was complete and capable of resolving the historical title questions; – whether the 1983 Land Registry registration and apparent merger of titles occurred while a genuine dispute over the property remained unresolved; – whether missing deeds, historical agreements, court files, and registration documents have left material evidential gaps; – whether the farmhouse, garden, and curtilage may have constituted a distinct legal parcel from the surrounding agricultural land; and – whether the circumstances surrounding demolition shortly after eviction raise issues requiring further investigation. I have deliberately sought to separate established fact from interpretation. The enclosed working document is therefore structured as a forensic matrix: *Issue | Established Evidence (graded A–E) | Reasoned Inference (expressly identified) | Issue for Determination* Each factual assertion is accompanied by a source reference. Where a conclusion is suggested, it is labelled as inference rather than fact. The purpose is not to present a concluded case, but to identify whether the available evidence discloses unresolved legal questions. The principal issues examined include, among others: – the status and enforceability of the 1974 licence; – the distinction between possession proceedings and determination of title; – possible separation of the farmhouse holding from the wider agricultural estate; – the significance of missing historical deeds and tenancy documents; – the circumstances of first registration and title merger; – the nature of the original 1667 transaction and subsequent hereditary occupation; – the absence of a continuous documentary rent trail; – the treatment of Mary Doreen Williams’s asserted ownership claim; and – the timing and circumstances of the demolition following eviction. The research has also identified significant documentary gaps. Some records have been located through archive work and FOI processes, while others remain missing or inaccessible. Recent correspondence from HM Land Registry indicates that further historical registration material survives and may now be capable of examination. This has prompted the question whether important evidence existed but was not available during the earlier proceedings. I am not seeking advocacy at this stage. I am seeking an objective assessment from experienced counsel as to whether these matters, individually or cumulatively, disclose sufficient legal substance to justify further investigation, and what form that investigation should take. I would therefore be grateful if you could advise whether this is a matter on which you, or an appropriate colleague, might be prepared to provide an initial view and, if so, what material you would require in the first instance. Regards, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]

Dear Glamorgan Archives, I am researching the deaths and burial arrangements of the following individuals and would be grateful for any assistance with parish / burial registers or related records in your custody: 1. William (Billy) Buckler – Died on or about 29 May 1990 at Llandough Hospital, aged 41 – Interred at St Michael’s Church, Michaelston-le-Pit (funeral service – Contemporary reports confirm burial at St Michael’s rather than the family resting place at Llandough. 2. Mary Doreen Williams – Born 10 August 1913 – Death registered March 1983, South Glamorgan (Vol 28, Page 3029) – Any burial or related parish entries that may connect her to the Llandough / Michaelston / [removed] area or the Buckler family would be of interest. Please advise what registers or indexes are held for St Michael’s, Michaelston-le-Pit and nearby parishes for the relevant periods, the procedure for obtaining copies or transcripts, any research service fees, and how best to proceed. Thank you for your help. Yours faithfully, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]
M52 · 22 Aug 2026 18:57 UTC · Sion Buckler · Ty Mawr, Llandough, Cardiff
Glamorgan Archives Team, I am writing to make a targeted archive research enquiry concerning the DBDT collection and any related Bute, Mountjoy or Western Ground Rents material held by Glamorgan Archives. I am investigating the historic title, occupation and parcel boundaries of *Great House Farm (Tŷ Mawr), Llandough*, particularly evidence concerning a possible historical division of the farm between land retained by the Bute Estate and land allegedly sold or transferred to *Daniel Thomas*. A family witness account describes a specific arrangement under which approximately ten acres, including the farmhouse, were allegedly sold by the Bute Estate to Daniel Thomas, while a separate portion of approximately nine acres remained under the Bute Estate. The account further describes quarrying on the Thomas-held land and an agreement under which the freehold would eventually pass to the occupying family when quarrying ceased. I appreciate that this account requires verification against the original documentary record. I am therefore seeking to identify the relevant deeds, agreements, plans and subsequent title documents. 1. Verification of specific DBDT catalogue entries Please confirm the exact property description, parties and date of the following catalogue entries, and, if possible, provide a digital copy or scan of the opening parties clause and any attached or marginal plan: – *DBDT10/19* – Lease (counterpart), described in the catalogue as concerning land and messuages in Bute Street, Cardiff, from trustees of the late Marquess of Bute to Mr Daniel Thomas, October 1850. – *DBDT10/20* – Agreement for a building lease of premises in Bute Town, Cardiff, involving the same parties, June 1849. I understand from the catalogue descriptions that these items concern Cardiff rather than Llandough. My purpose is to establish whether the *Daniel Thomas named in these instruments can be identified sufficiently to determine whether he is the same individual later connected with the Llandough lime works and land interests*, or whether these are unrelated transactions involving another person of the same name. Please also advise whether either document contains information identifying Daniel Thomas by residence, occupation, estate, trusteeship or other distinguishing details. 2. Targeted search for a Bute–Daniel Thomas transaction at or near Llandough Please search the catalogue descriptions and indexes available to Glamorgan Archives for any deed, conveyance, exchange, sale, transfer, lease, agreement, plan or related instrument involving: – *Daniel Thomas*; – *Alfred Thomas*; – the *Marquess of Bute*; – trustees of the Marquess of Bute; – the *Bute Estate*; and land at or near: – *Llandough*; – *Great House Farm / Great House / Tŷ Mawr*; – adjoining land or parcels that may subsequently have formed part of the farm. I am particularly interested in transactions dating from approximately *1876 to 1878*, but would be grateful for references to earlier or later documents where they form part of the same chain of title. In particular, I am seeking evidence capable of confirming or disproving whether any defined parcel of land was conveyed by the Bute Estate to Daniel Thomas. 3. Quarrying, lime works and any conditional reversion or transfer Please identify any relevant records concerning land at Llandough or Great House Farm that refer to: – quarrying; – quarries or quarry land; – lime works or lime kilns; – mineral rights; – removal of quarrying machinery; – reduction or cessation of rent as land was quarried; – termination of quarrying; – a future conveyance, reversion, surrender or transfer of a freehold interest when quarrying ceased. The particular issue I am investigating is whether an agreement existed under which occupation or ownership of a defined parcel was intended to change when quarrying operations came to an end. 4. Daniel Thomas, Alfred Thomas and the Llandough lime works Please identify any documents linking *Daniel Thomas*, or his son *Alfred Thomas (later Lord Pontypridd)*, with: – land at Llandough; – the Llandough lime works or lime kilns; – quarrying operations; – Great House Farm or adjoining agricultural land; – any freehold or leasehold interest in the area. I would be particularly interested in estate papers, correspondence, conveyances, wills, probate-related estate records, rentals, rent books, abstracts of title and plans that may trace what became of any Daniel Thomas interest after his death or thereafter. 5. Subsequent title and occupation Please identify any abstracts of title, estate maps, conveyances, correspondence, tenancy records or other material that may assist in establishing: 1. what happened to any freehold interest held by Daniel Thomas or his estate; 2. whether such an interest was ever conveyed, surrendered or transferred back to the Bute Estate or another party; 3. whether the Bute Estate later reacquired any relevant parcel; 4. whether later parties, including *Mountjoy Ltd* or *Western Ground Rents Ltd*, acquired title to land previously held by Daniel Thomas or his successors; 5. the basis on which later tenancies described as covering the “whole” of Great House Farm were granted. I am also interested in any material linking these title questions with the occupation of the farm by the *Williams family*. 6. Plans and parcel boundaries A separate line of research concerns the possibility that historic legal boundaries passed through or between different parts of the Great House Farm complex. Accordingly, please identify any: – estate maps; – conveyance plans; – tenancy plans; – quarry plans; – large-scale plans; – boundary plans; – valuation plans; that show Great House Farm, the farmhouse, garden, stables, outbuildings or adjoining parcels. I am particularly interested in documents that could establish whether different parts of the historic building complex fell within different legal parcels. I appreciate that some of these requests may require staff research beyond a standard enquiry. My immediate priority is to obtain *the relevant catalogue references and confirmation of what material exists*. If more detailed searching or document retrieval is necessary, please let me know the applicable procedure, estimated cost and whether a formal paid research request would be required. If relevant documents have been digitised, I would be grateful for details of the cost of obtaining copies. Otherwise, please advise whether they can be consulted in person and whether any restrictions or advance ordering requirements apply. Thank you for your assistance. The documents identified through this enquiry may be important to reconstructing the historical chain of title and occupation of Great House Farm, Llandough from the nineteenth century onwards. Yours faithfully, *Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]*

Glamorgan Archives Team, Further to my email of 22 August 2026 concerning the DBDT collection and related Bute, Mountjoy and Western Ground Rents material (particularly Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr, Llandough), please treat this as an additional request. I have attached an image of the land parcel in question, believed to be in the mislabelled record in question. **Request: physical examination of DBDT79/1** Catalogue entry: Lease (counterpart) of land and premises situate in Pembroke Terrace, Cardiff, from the Marquess of Bute to Mr John Williams, May 1877 [1 parchment, plan in margin]. Please examine the original document (not the catalogue description alone) and confirm: 1. Parties and date – Does the original name the Marquess of Bute and Mr John Williams, and is it dated May 1877? 2. Property description – Exact wording of the land and premises. Does it expressly locate the property in Pembroke Terrace, Cardiff? 3. Llandough / other references – Any mention (body text, plan, schedule, endorsements or annotations) of Llandough, Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr, Western Ground Rents, or any locality outside Pembroke Terrace? 4. Marginal plan – Does the plan identify the location sufficiently? If procedures allow, please supply a digital image or scan of the plan. 5. Further identifying details – Any adjoining owners, plot numbers, parish, street numbers, measurements, previous ownership, rent, consideration, or cross-references to other instruments. If scanning is permitted, images of the parties clause, property description and marginal plan would be ideal. Otherwise a transcription or detailed description of those sections will suffice. **Catalogue wording discrepancy** Most other 1877 entries in the series describe the grantor as the “Trustees of the Will of the late Marquess of Bute”. DBDT79/1 is catalogued simply as “from the Marquess of Bute”. From the original, please confirm: – who executed the lease; – the capacity in which the grantor is described; – whether the Marquess is shown acting personally or through trustees; – any evident reason for the difference from the other 1877 entries. (I note the 3rd Marquess attained majority around this period, but I seek the Archives’ evidence-based confirmation rather than assumption.) **Purpose** I am reconstructing the historical title position for Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr, Llandough, and need to distinguish any Cardiff property records from those relating to the Llandough estate. Please report the physical contents of DBDT79/1 separately from the catalogue description, noting any differences. Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to your response to both the original enquiry and this request. Also see attached a letter to my friend earlier today, which puts the purpose of this enquiry and search and record and its importance into some context for you. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] It might help you to unearth records I’m unaware of. There’s 133 houses about to be developed on this land and their title maybe defective. So please be diligent so that an egregious irreversible mistake or injustice isn’t made. Regards, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]

We think you have probably already covered all the material we have on this matter but… 1-3) We do not hold the majority of the Bute Estate records. I attach a finding aid to the Bute Estate records that are currently held by Cardiff Library. These records are soon to be transferred to us so please let us know if there is anything on this list that you are interested in. Other records of the Bute Estate can be found at the National Library of Wales. 4) We are not sure if you have consulted D696 which includes a book plans and rental books for land owned by Western Ground Rents Ltd c1938-1944. 6. Have you looked at historic Ordnance Survey plans to show boundaries? Some of these can be viewed online e.g. Map Finder – with Outlines – National Library of Scotland<[meeting link removed] Mary consulted the 1910 Land Valuation book for Llandough (DVAL/1/33) but we do not have the corresponding maps to go with this – you would need to contact the National Archives for a copy of this. We hope that this information is of use to you. Please note that we aim to answer all emails in order but the longer more complicated ones may take up to 15 working days to respond to. Louise, Thanks for your detailed and prompt reply and for the additional information concerning the Bute Estate records and D696. I just want to clarify one important point in relation to my original enquiry, as I think I may have caused a slight misunderstanding about the particular transaction I am trying to establish. My principal question is *not whether there are deeds between the Bute Estate and Alfred Thomas*. The key transaction I am trying to locate and verify is the *1877 transaction concerning Daniel Thomas and the Bute Estate*, which I understand from the surviving family evidence to have concerned a defined portion of Great House Farm, including the farmhouse and surrounding land. I see an 1877 agreement between both parties, for that year, but for a different property in Cardiff. I wondered if it was mis labelled and if you could validify its content, particularly any map data. So as the integrity of the descriptor of the record is assured or revisited. The issue is whether the Bute Estate *conveyed, granted or otherwise dealt with that defined parcel in favour of Daniel Thomas*, and, crucially, what the instrument and its plan actually show about the boundaries and the nature of the interest created. In 1877. This is important because the present documentary reconstruction I am preparing treats the 1877 instrument as the potential starting point for the separate House Plot chain. The working case is that the instrument dealt with the farmhouse land separately from the eastern agricultural/quarrying parcel, with provisions connected to quarrying and the subsequent passing of the house land to the occupying Williams family when quarrying ceased. That proposition is expressly being treated as a matter requiring verification against the original instrument and plan, rather than as an established fact. I therefore wonder whether the catalogue search could be reconsidered specifically on the following basis: *Bute Estate → Daniel Thomas → defined land at Llandough / Great House Farm, approximately 1876–1878* including instruments which may not themselves be catalogued under “Great House Farm” or “Daniel Thomas”, but which might appear under: – the name of the property or former field name; – the Marquess of Bute or his trustees as grantor; – Daniel Thomas as builder, quarryman, lime-burner or occupier; – a lease, conveyance, agreement, surrender or counterpart; – quarrying or mineral rights; – a plan accompanying an instrument; – or a transaction recorded in a Bute Estate rental, ledger or estate correspondence rather than in the deed catalogue. I appreciate that your catalogue may simply contain no surviving record of this transaction. If that is the position, that is useful information in itself. What I am particularly trying to establish is whether *the 1877 transaction has been positively searched for and not found*, as opposed to there being no later catalogue entry linking Daniel or Alfred Thomas to the Bute Estate. D696 and the later Western Ground Rents material Thank you also for pointing me towards D696. Please do let me know which item(s) within D696 contain the *book plans and rental books for Western Ground Rents Ltd c.1938–1944*, particularly anything relating to Great House Farm, Llandough or the land occupied by John Williams. This is potentially very relevant because the documentary issue I am investigating is whether the later WGR estate corresponded geographically with the parcel dealt with by the Bute Estate in 1877, or instead with the separate agricultural/quarrying parcel. Bute Estate finding aid I would also be grateful if you could retain my enquiry against the Bute Estate material being transferred from Cardiff Library. In particular, I would be interested in any items concerning: – Llandough / Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr; – Daniel Thomas; – the 1870s Bute Estate conveyances or leases; – estate plans showing parcel boundaries; – quarrying or lime works; – rentals distinguishing the farm from the farmhouse/cottages; and – subsequent dealings with the relevant parcels. 1910 Land Valuation map Finally, thank you for identifying DVAL/1/33. If Glamorgan Archives has any information enabling me to identify the corresponding *1910 valuation map held by The National Archives*, I would be grateful for the relevant reference. I am trying to make a targeted request rather than simply asking The National Archives to search broadly for a Llandough map. Thank you again for your assistance. The clarification regarding what is and is not held at Glamorgan Archives is useful, and I appreciate your help in narrowing down the surviving documentary trail. Yours sincerely, *Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]* [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] [quoted text trimmed]
M62 · 14 Sep 2026 10:49 UTC · Glamro / Swyddfa Cofnodion Morgannwg · RE: DBDT79/1 – physical examination of the original
Ref: 2026/3893 Dear Sion Buckler, Thank you for your email received into our enquiries system 27th August relating to the deed in our collection with document reference DBDT/79/1. The catalogue description for DBDT/79/1 had a few small errors which have now been corrected. In answer to your questions: 1. Parties and date – Does the original name the Marquess of Bute and Mr John Williams, and is it dated May 1877? The document is a counterpart lease dated 2 May 1877 between the Trustees of the Will of the late Marquess of Bute and Mr John Williams of Newport. 1. Property description – Exact wording of the land and premises. Does it expressly locate the property in Pembroke Terrace, Cardiff? ‘All that piece or parcel of land with the messuage or tenement and outbuildings thereto now being erected and built or part thereof by the said lesee, situate, lying and being in Pembroke Terrace in the parish of St John the Baptist, Cardiff containing by admeasurement sixty-nine feet or thereabouts on the north side thereof, thirty-one feet or thereabouts on the east and west sides thereof and sixty-nine feet six inches or thereaboutson the south side thereof bounded on the north by land of the Marquess of Bute, on the east by Pembroke Terrace aforesaid, on the south by land demised to David Price and on the west by land of Mr John William Vachell.’ 1. Llandough / other references – Any mention (body text, plan, schedule, endorsements or annotations) of Llandough, Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr, Western Ground Rents, or any locality outside Pembroke Terrace? There is no mention of Llandough, Great House Farm or Ty Mawr or any other property outside of Pembroke Terrace. 1. Marginal plan – Does the plan identify the location sufficiently? If procedures allow, please supply a digital image or scan of the plan. The plan clearly shows a property on Pembroke Terrace. We can provide a digital copy if you require it at a charge of £15.60 (inclusive of VAT). Please find attached a digital photography order form. 1. Further identifying details – Any adjoining owners, plot numbers, parish, street numbers, measurements, previous ownership, rent, consideration, or cross-references to other instruments. See above for full description. There is no further information included. We hope that this answers your questions in relation to this document but please do let us know if you would like order a digital copy. M63 · 16 Sep 2026 23:20 UTC · Sion Buckler · Enquiry — does D153/1–8 contain a c.1875–1880 Llandough-juxta-Penarth instrument?
Archivist, Please would you check whether D153/1–8 contains any document dated c.1875–1880 relating to Great House Farm / Ty Mawr, Llandough-juxta-Penarth (ST 168 733), adjoining St Dochdwy’s churchyard. This is not Great House Farm, Llandough near Cowbridge. I am looking for an agreement, lease, counterpart, award, conveyance or related plan involving any of: Daniel Thomas / D. Thomas & Son Llandough Limeworks John Williams / Thomas Williams the Bute Estate or the Trustees of the Marquess of Bute quarrying, minerals, lime, sidings, compensation or reparation the dwelling adjoining the churchyard Please inspect the full sequence D153/1–8, not only items already described as D153/4–8. Catalogue titles may not name the parties. Endorsements, dockets and plans should be checked. If such an item exists, please give: the exact reference date document type parties as written property description and acreage whether a plan is attached whether a copy can be supplied, and at what cost Also is there any item in D153/1–8 dated 1875–1880 naming Thomas Williams, John Williams, Daniel Thomas, Llandough Limeworks, or the dwelling by St Dochdwy’s? Please confirm D/DRa 11/120 is Tynywain, Llanedeyrne, and not Llandough-juxta-Penarth/ Llandough Cardiff. I do not need a searchroom booking at this stage. Yours faithfully, Sion Buckler

Ref: 2026/4097 Dear Sion Buckler, Thank you for your email received into our enquiries system 8th September. Please find below answers to your questions in turn. Please note that prices quoted are without VAT based on the fact that you are in Patagonia. **26 May 2026 (2026/2370)** 1. 1974 demolition petition, Llandough juxta Penarth — ref or not held. There is not a petition held within our collection. You would need to know who the petition was submitted to in order to search for any further reference to it. If it was submitted to the planning authority there may be mention in the Planning Committee minutes and reports – see point 6 below. **29 May 2026 FOIA/EIR (2026/2372)** 2. Williams/Buckler as owners, tenants, or reporters of the 1880 floor discovery. One source of information about ownership would be rate books. UC/73/1 is a rate book for 1882 – this is the nearest we have to 1880. A search of this (and later volumes UC/73/1-5 covers 1882-1902 and then UDPE/T/30 and UDPE/T/32 cover dates after 1900) could be undertaken by staff on your behalf at a charge of £50 which would include copies of relevant entries. 3. Gaps / missing volumes / withdrawals 1950–1989. We have never had a full set of records that would show the full tenancy/ownership history of Great House / Ty Mawr Farm. With all historical research of this nature, it is necessary to piece together information from surviving records that have been deposited with us. There are not any records that have been withdrawn from our collections that would have provided additional information to this search for the period 1950-1989. 4. Why the fabric was not scheduled before 1988 (or “Cadw holds this; we hold nothing”). Not held in our collections – suggest contacting Cadw and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. 5. Internal preservation assessments. As above – suggest contacting Cadw and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. 6. Planning files for this acreage / demolition / Church View Close — file refs, not class names. We do not hold planning files (it is possible some files may still be held by the Vale of Glamorgan Council Planning Department), but we do hold copies of the Planning Committee minutes and reports. Mary Buckler started looking at the Planning Committee minutes and reports on her last visit to the searchroom on 13th August. The document references to start with for these would be DCVG/C/4/36/76-77 and DCVG/C/4/36/94 these are for the planning applications 1989/01396/OUT and 1992/00671/RES. It is possible that the minutes may make reference to any earlier applications or discussions. A search of these records and anything else that they lead to could be carried out by staff at a charge of £50 to include copies of any relevant pages found. 7. When the known archaeology was raised in planning. If any record of this is in our collections it would appear in the Planning Committee records described above in point 6. 8. EIAs / HER / developer briefs 1980–1990. The HER for Wales is searchable via the Heneb website: Historic Environment Records (HER) – Heneb<https://heneb.org.uk/historic-environment-records-her/>. You could also contact the Glamorgan Gwent Archaeological Trust to see if they have any relevant information. **27 July / 5 August 2026 (2026/3309)** 9. DB/E/1–2 Stewart survey / Cedfin. This was consulted and photographed by Mary Buckler in our public searchroom. If you would like to receive copies of the pages relating to Ty Mawr this would be two images (one from DB/E/1 the survey and one from DB/E/2 the terrier). Total cost £17 (£13 for the first image in the order and £4 for the next image). 10. Lambert Williams–Bute agreements 1818–1835 (not the D160 maps already seen). Not held. Possibly at the National Library of Wales? 11. Material related to NLW D219. Not held – this is a National Library of Wales reference: Llandough manorial leases and agreements, – National Library of Wales Archives and Manuscripts<https://archives.library.wales/index.php/llandough-manorial-leases-and-agreements> You should contact the NLW for access or copies. 12. D153/4–8 1876 limeworks severance — not seen. Not held – this is a National Library of Wales reference: Deeds relating to premises in p. Llandough, co. Glam., comprising a dwelling house adjoining the churchyard, 1811 (D153/1-2), land (19 …, – National Library of Wales Archives and Manuscripts<https://archives.library.wales/index.php/deeds-relating-to-premises-in-p-llandough-co-glam-comprising-dwelling-house-adjoining-churchyard-1811-d153-1-2-land-19>. You should contact the NLW for access or copies. 13. DXJF/64/27–32 full sketch bundle — notes seen; confirm sketches and refs. We believe that the specific references within the bundle 27-32 that would be of interest to you are items DXJF/64/30-31: sketch of former layout of part of village of Llandough-juxta-Penarth by Mrs. Nancy Buckler of great house farm, Llandough, with notes c1950 [1 card, 1 paper]. Is that what you have already seen? Other items in the bundle do not relate to Llandough. 14. DCOWHS on Buckler of Penarth (not DCO/WHS/2). DCOWHS/2 is the only part of the DCOWHS (Cowbridge and District Local History Society) that relates to Buckler of Penarth. No other records held. 15. Exact ref of the Nov 1877 counterpart already photographed; separate July 1877 counterpart? I think the items described below have been discussed previously – are these what you are seeking? Please confirm and we can provide a quote for producing copies if required. Document reference * DBDT/1/3 Title * Adamsdown Square leases from the trustees of the will of the late Marquess of Bute<https://glamorgan.epexio.com/en/records/DBDT/1-110/1>. Cardiff RDC records for this farm. No records found. The area was not covered by Cardiff Rural District Council but rather Penarth Urban District Council. 17. DRA 418–420 / DRA 5/31 if this site. Neither of these are complete document references from our collection. Perhaps you could check these references or let us know what you think they should be and we will be happy to search our catalogue. 18. UDPE/S/1/68. This was viewed by Mary Buckler on 6th August and is a set of plans for a pair of semi-detached houses on the road between Dinas Powys and Llandough. If you would like copies of these plans 5 images will be required at a charge of £20. 19. Penarth estate/tithe/OS/boundary plans of the house plot (not Cowbridge 1924/38). The relevant estate map would be the Bute Estate survey which is referred to in point 9 above. You can view the tithe map online here: Tithe Maps of Wales<https://places.library.wales/viewer/4622411#?cv=&h=95&xywh=10530%2C8509%2C3549%2C1196> along with the accompanying apportionment: Tithe Maps of Wales<https://places.library.wales/viewer/4542756#?cv=1&h=95&xywh=-507%2C-68%2C2508%2C897>. Many historic Ordnance Survey maps can also be viewed online, for example through the National Library of Scotland website: Map Finder – with Outlines – National Library of Scotland<[meeting link removed] 20. WGR / Mountjoy / BP Pension Trust / BP Properties papers. The only relevant papers we have are those mentioned in point 5.4 in my email of 7th September: collection reference D696 – book of plans and rental books for land owned by Western Ground Rents Ltd c1938-1944. A search of these records could be carried out on your behalf at a charge of £50. 21. Associated bundles stored separately. All catalogues have been searched for your enquiry. 22. Uncatalogued / recent deposits 1875–1988. A search of our accessions database, which records all records received into our collection even if they haven’t yet been catalogued, has not revealed any additional records. 23. Photography for copies to Patagonia — rules. Please find attached the digital photography order form which applies wherever you are based. As mentioned above, prices quoted do not include VAT due to your location. You need to sign and agree to the declaration on the order form. **22 August 2026 — no reply** 24–29. DBDT10/19 and 10/20 identification of Daniel Thomas; Bute–Thomas search at Llandough juxta Penarth; quarry/lime/reversion instruments (poor-rate occupation already seen); later title; research cost. These points were answered in my email of 7th September. **26 August 2026 — no reply** 30–35. Physical examination of original **DBDT79/1** (catalogued May [removed]). Treat as a different instrument from the Nov 1877 Llandough counterpart unless you confirm they are the same. These points were answered in my email of 14th September. We hope that this information is of use to you. We will respond to other outstanding emails in due course. Louise, Thank you again for your very detailed response under reference 2026/4097. You have been extremely helpful throughout this research, and I am very conscious of that. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] I wanted to reply because I think I can now explain more precisely what I am trying to establish from the records. I am trying to reconstruct what happened historically which led my late grandmother and father, over many decades, to continue asserting that our family owned the land at Great House Farm, while that position was repeatedly contested and ultimately possession was awarded to BP in *BP Properties Ltd v Buckler*. What has caused me to revisit the documentary history is that the later position is not as straightforward as I had previously assumed. Land Registry has now told me that its position is not that it determined that my family did not own the land; but it insists that no registration mistake has been identified, which is what the MP forwarded me [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] At the same time, I have so far found no convincing documentary evidence of my family paying rent for the particular parcel which we occupied and claimed as our own after the quarrying arrangement appears to have come to an end. I have therefore had one of my AI agents published my current reconstruction, including the documentary sources behind it, here: Great House Farm research <https://reference-url-citation.invalid/3> I am not asking you to accept that reconstruction. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] I am asking for your help in testing it against the records held by Glamorgan Archives. The central question My present understanding is that what had originally been treated as one agricultural holding can, when the surviving documents are examined chronologically, be distinguished into two areas. For simplicity, I have called them *Parcel A* and *Parcel B*: – *Parcel A* — the farmhouse, house plot, garden and associated land north/west of St Dochdwy’s Church, occupied by my family; and – *Parcel B* — the agricultural land to the east which was subject to the agricultural tenancy and subsequently associated with Western Ground Rents. I appreciate that “Parcel A” and “Parcel B” are my labels, not historical descriptions appearing in the documents. But they aren’t entirely just my labels, parcel B is clearly what is in the 1939 map, which you hold, which the council clerk for Llandough directed me to earlier this year, on his day of retirement. Also in 1983 two parcels were merged at the land registry, by BP. Which confirms two parcels. I have purchased all those records avaliable and the maps do confirm what I suspect. The important question is whether the *underlying documents themselves support the physical distinction*. My working reconstruction is that the 1877 Daniel Thomas/Williams arrangements ultimately resulted in my family acquiring the freehold interest in the land around the farmhouse when the quarrying arrangement came to an end, with the last machinery leaving in 1928. If that is correct, it would explain something which otherwise appears very difficult to reconcile. The 1916 agricultural tenancy may have covered both parcels of the farm as a whole at that time. But if part of that holding subsequently ceased to be part of the agricultural tenancy because of my family’s interest in the parcel A crystallising into our freehold of parcel A, then the 1938 Western Ground Rents acquisition and the *1939 revised agricultural tenancy* would not necessarily concern our farmhouse land. Despite decades of it being treated as though it did and our occupancy being allegedly permissive[personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] I inherit this interest in this land parcel A as heir and successor. That is why the 1939 plan was so important and helpful. The point I would particularly like you to confirm *When you look at the actual 1939 Western Ground Rents revised tenancy and its plan, I presume you see the same thing I see?* My reading is that the plan depicts *Parcel B, the eastern agricultural land, but does not depict or include Parcel A containing the farmhouse and the land immediately associated with it.* If that is what the plan shows, I would be very grateful if you could simply confirm that. If I am wrong, I would equally value you telling me that I am wrong and, ideally, pointing me to the feature of the plan or accompanying document which demonstrates that. I am not asking you to determine what that means in law. Only whether *we are looking at the same physical information in the same historical document*. That distinction is crucial because I am increasingly concerned that the later history may have proceeded on the assumption that there was only one undivided parcel, when the contemporary records may actually distinguish two different interests. I would like to do the same exercise with the other records Your response itself says: “With all historical research of this nature, it is necessary to piece together information from surviving records that have been deposited with us.” That is precisely what I am now trying to do. I understand the scientific process demands you look at the evidence and tell what it tells. But I’ve done that, I’m making my case. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] Because in one hand I have the narrative, from court documents and news articles saying we were squatters. In the other hand I have credible evidence we had no issue relinquishing their parcel. The problem was all with us on our parcel. And Western Ground Rents and BP don’t appear to ever had our parcel to be able to assert we were on it permissively. And the 1982 registration of their parcel in their name, is paradoxically based on an alledged no contest our occupancy was permissive. When its all we’ve done since the 40’s is challenge it. Almost a century. I would therefore be grateful if, where reasonably possible, you could look at the relevant surviving records and tell me whether the documentary evidence supports, contradicts, or simply does not establish the following: *1. 1916* I think the 1916 agricultural tenancy appears to encompass the whole farm as it then stood. Weather it was 2 seperate parcels then I don’t know. *2. 1877 / 1928* Do the surviving Thomas/Williams/quarrying records support or contradict the proposition that the farmhouse parcel was treated differently from the eastern agricultural land, and that the relevant quarrying arrangement had an effect on the family’s interest in that land by 1928? *3. 1938* Does the Western Ground Rents conveyance or associated material show that WGR acquired the farmhouse/house plot itself, or does it appear to concern only the agricultural interest which subsequently appears in the 1939 tenancy? *4. 1939* Does the revised WGR tenancy plan contain only the eastern agricultural parcel, excluding the farmhouse and its immediate land? This is the point on which I would particularly appreciate a direct confirmation or correction. *5. 1955 / 1962 / 1974* Do the surviving records contain any express documentary act which actually transferred, extinguished or otherwise conclusively disposed of the family’s claimed interest in the farmhouse parcel? I am deliberately not asking you to determine the legal effect of those events. I am asking whether such an express documentary act appears in the records. *6. Later title history* Do the surviving Glamorgan Archives records contain documentary evidence showing how the farmhouse parcel itself passed from the earlier family interest into Western Ground Rents, BP or another owner before the 1982/83 registration? Or is that documentary chain simply not present in the surviving archive? I would genuinely welcome correction I want to emphasise this because I do not want this correspondence to become an exercise in asking the Archive to validate my theory. If I have misunderstood the records, *please tell me plainly*. If the records support what I am seeing, please tell me that plainly too. And if the surviving material cannot establish the point either way, that is also a useful and perfectly acceptable answer. Something as simple as: *Supported by the surviving record* *Not supported / contradicted by the surviving record* *Cannot be determined from the surviving record* would be enormously helpful to me, together with the relevant reference where possible. I am particularly keen to establish this because the research has already demonstrated the value of going back to the underlying documents rather than relying upon later descriptions of them. The 1877 material is a good example: what initially appeared to be an inconsistency has been capable of being reconsidered once the underlying research and records were examined. That has made me realise that I need to make sure that I am not making the same mistake in reverse. I do not want to build an elaborate theory around a document which I have simply misunderstood. I am not asking the Archive to become a party to the dispute I completely understand the distinction between an archive holding a record and a court or Land Registry determining legal title. I am not asking Glamorgan Archives to adjudicate the dispute, give me legal advice, determine ownership, or take sides against any present landowner or public authority. I am asking for something considerably narrower: *I want to know whether the historical documentary evidence held by the Archive actually shows what I think it shows.* That seems to me to be a legitimate research question for an archive service, particularly where the answer can be expressed simply by reference to what is physically depicted or expressly recorded in the documents. I also appreciate that the statutory FOI duty itself does not necessarily require an archive to create a new interpretation of information merely because a requester asks for one. I am not trying to turn this into such a demand. I am asking for professional assistance and dialogue in understanding the historical material, which seems consistent with Glamorgan Archives’ own published access principles concerning open two-way communication, active participation by users and responsiveness to the community it serves. The wider Archive Service Accreditation framework likewise recognises access and engagement with communities as a core part of the function of an archive service. I think that distinction is important. Why this matters to me I am trying to establish what actually happened to my late grandmother and father’s claimed ownership of their home and land. Mary Williams and her family upheld that claim for decades [wording updated at the author’s request, 19 Oct 2026]. The claim was contested. The matter eventually resulted in the loss of possession and the subsequent demolition of the farmhouse. [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] I am now approaching this as a researcher trying to establish the documentary truth of a family and community history. I am not asking anyone to believe my family merely because it is our family history. Quite the opposite. *I want the records to decide what can and cannot properly be said.* That is why I would value an open exchange with the people who hold those records. If you look at the 1939 plan and say, “No, Sion, I don’t think it excludes the farmhouse parcel, and this is why,” I would consider that extremely useful. If you say, “Yes, I can see exactly what you are seeing — the plan depicts the eastern agricultural land and does not include the farmhouse parcel,” that is equally important. And if the surviving records simply do not allow the point to be determined, I would rather have that stated clearly than have either of us infer something which the evidence cannot sustain. I think that is the most constructive way for us to proceed. There is a shared interest here in getting the history right. These are records of the community in which we all live, and I think their greatest value is realised when the surviving evidence can be examined openly, critically and collaboratively. I would therefore be very grateful if you could engage with the question at that documentary level and tell me, as plainly as possible, *whether you see what I see*. M66 · 27 Sep 2026 04:16 UTC · Sion Buckler · South Wales Constabulary records, November–December 1988 — Great House Farm, Llandough
Dear Glamorgan Archives Team, I am researching the eviction and demolition at Great House Farm (Tŷ Mawr), Llandough, between 29 November and 6 December 1988. South Wales Constabulary officers were present. I understand from the South Wales Police Heritage Centre that Glamorgan Archives holds records of South Wales Police and its predecessor forces. Could you tell me whether you hold any of the following for late 1988, and their references and access conditions: 1. Occurrence books, station or duty records for the division covering Llandough (Penarth, Barry or Cardiff). 2. Operational orders or files for police attendance at evictions, sheriff’s or bailiffs’ enforcement, or breach-of-the-peace deployments. 3. Press office or public relations files for November–December 1988. 4. Any deposit list or transfer schedule for South Wales Constabulary records covering 1985–1990, so I can see what was and was not deposited. I also hold references ACA/8/2 (your ref 2026–3941) and 2026/3893 from earlier enquiries, if that helps connect this to my existing file. If some records are closed, please tell me the closure period and whether I can apply for access to the parts that concern my family. M67 · 28 Sep 2026 21:41 UTC · Sion Buckler · Preservation notice — Great House Farm (Tŷ Mawr), Llandough — do not destroy, transfer or dispose
To each recipient, in your own capacity as holder or likely holder of records. Please do not treat this as a joint reply. Answer only for your own holdings. Sirs/Madam, This is a preservation notice. It is not a claim form and not service of proceedings. It does not replace any FOI, review or subject access request already with you. Land: Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr, Llandough-juxta-Penarth, adjoining St Dochdwy’s. Titles WA231076, WA240304 (closed), WA513690, WA735527, and any related title. Planning refs 89/01396/OUT and 92/00671/RES. Please preserve, and do not destroy, transfer out of your custody without a written receipt, or dispose of, any file, plan, photograph, tape or electronic record in your possession, custody or control relating to: 1. The 1877 split, the 1916 and 1939 tenancies, and the 1938 Bute to Western Ground Rents conveyance. 2. The 1955 and 1962 possession orders, the 1974 proceedings, and BP Properties Ltd v Buckler [1987] EWCA Civ 2. 3. First registration: WA231076 application 30 November 1982; WA240304 application 23 February 1983; later amalgamation. 4. The 1988 possession (29 November) and demolition (begun 6 December), including listing, planning, police and any liaison papers. 5. Mary Doreen Williams (died 26 March 1983) and William Buckler, so far as your file concerns this land. Also preserve, if you hold them, the following planning and land-charge classes. Absence from a 2026 file disclosure is not proof they never existed: 6. Any section 52 Town and Country Planning Act 1971 agreement, later section 106 instrument, deed, undertaking or other agreement regulating the development or use of this land, and any corresponding local-land-charge entry. 7. The historic planning-register entries required by the Town and Country Planning General Development Order 1988 for 89/01396/OUT and 92/00671/RES (applications, reserved matters, plans and drawings, and decision information). 8. The officer’s report annexes to 89/01396/OUT, including Appendix B (further GGAT comments after discussions with the Trust), and Appendices C–E. 9. The condition chain on 89/01396/OUT: conditions 16–18; the Council’s October 1990 confirmation of condition 17; GGAT’s July 1992 archaeological warning; the September 1992 reserved-matters approval; and the 1993–94 papers on whether condition 18 had been discharged. 10. Any preliminary environmental-assessment / screening determination for the outline application (site described as about 3.4 acres / 1.38 ha). 11. Any record of the statutory consultation route used because the land was, or was treated as, a site of archaeological interest / SMR entry under the 1988 Order. 12. The complete 92/00671/RES file, and any sale, option, conditional-contract or transfer paper on the planning files covering BP Properties to Ideal Homes Wales, including the recorded transfer of 3 December 1993. 13. The application-receipt record for 89/01396/OUT (form dated October 1989; reconstructed Council receipt 8 November 1989). Please stop routine deletion, including archived mailboxes, for anything in that scope. The public evidence index is / . The investigation distinguishes the farmhouse parcel from the eastern fields. The 1987 Court of Appeal decided possession, limitation and the October 1974 letters. It did not decide the documentary root of the farmhouse parcel. These records go to that question. This notice is not a finding against any of you. Please acknowledge, name the officer responsible for the hold, and say what you hold in scope. If you hold nothing, say what you searched. Nothing in this letter abandons any claim concerning title, registration, concealment, limitation, reopening or alteration of the register. Yours faithfully, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case] [signature block trimmed]

Ref: 2026/4097b Dear Sion Buckler, Thank you for your additional email that was received on 8th September. Please accept our apologies for the delay in responding; we have recently been receiving a large number of enquiries. In response to your questions below: 1. Daniel Thomas 1877 deed: we do not appear to hold any deeds relating to this transaction. A search of our catalogue has been carried out and we cannot suggest any documents that would be worth searching to find record of the transaction you are seeking information on that are within our collections. There are some records in the Cardiff Library Bute collection that may be relevant though, see point 3 below. 2. D696 Western Ground Rents: please see our catalogue for descriptions of the three volumes included in this collection: D696/1<https://canfod.glamarchives.gov.uk/en/records/D696/1>, D696/2<https://canfod.glamarchives.gov.uk/en/records/D696/2>, D696/3<https://canfod.glamarchives.gov.uk/en/records/D696/3>. As mentioned previously, a member of our team could search these records on your behalf at a charge, or they can be accessed for free in our public searchroom. Only once the records have been searched would we be able to confirm whether any information is held within them in relation to land in Llandough and Ty Mawr / Great House Farm. 3. Cardiff Library Bute Estate records: one possible record that could be worth searching in this collection is document reference Bute X.6(12) which contains abstracts of payments and receipts by the trustees of the Marquis of Bute’s properties, 1877 (copy). Other similar records in Bute X might also be of interest (see attached catalogue). These records are currently still with Cardiff Library so you should contact them about access in the short-term. 4. Land Valuation 1910 maps at National Archives: please the National Archives’ research guide on the land valuation records for guidance on how to find the maps: Land use, value and ownership: Valuation Office Survey 1910-1915 – The National Archives<https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/valuation-office-survey-land-value-ownership-1910-1915/#4-how-to-find-plans-maps>. When enquiring with the National Archives, ensure you are asking specifically about the 1910 land valuation survey maps. The Ordnance Survey sheet that is relevant to your search is Glamorgan XLVII.6. We hope that this information is of use to you. We will answer your remaining emails in due course. Yours sincerely, Louise Hunt Archifydd / Archivist Archifau Morgannwg / Glamorgan Archives [address removed] [signature block trimmed] [quoted text trimmed]

Ref: 2026/4274 Dear Sion Buckler, Thank you for your email received into our enquiries system 17th September. The majority of your email relates to document reference D153/1–8. As discussed in previous emails, this is a reference for material held at the National Library of Wales so you should contact them about these records. Detailed descriptions can be found on their online catalogue: Deeds relating to premises in p. Llandough, co. Glam., comprising a dwelling house adjoining the churchyard, 1811 (D153/1-2), land (19 …, – National Library of Wales Archives and Manuscripts<https://archives.library.wales/index.php/deeds-relating-to-premises-in-p-llandough-co-glam-comprising-dwelling-house-adjoining-churchyard-1811-d153-1-2-land-19> The other part of your email quotes a document reference that appears to come from our collections at Glamorgan Archives but we are not sure if it is the correct reference for what you are researching. D/DRa 11/120 is an old way of formatting our reference DRA/11/120. This forms part of the series DRA/11/1-293 which comprises lawsuits, instructions to counsel, opinions etc. relating to undermining of house property, flooding, contravention of colliery regulations, 1856-1909 in respect of Elder’s Navigation Colliery, Maesteg. This doesn’t seem relevant to your research and doesn’t relate to Tynywain either. Can you point us to where you found this reference so that we can assist further with your questions about this particular item? Yours sincerely, Louise Hunt Archifydd / Archivist Archifau Morgannwg / Glamorgan Archives [address removed] [signature block trimmed] [quoted text trimmed]
M70 · 10 Oct 2026 19:11 UTC · Sion Buckler · RE: 2026/4274 — thank you; D153 at NLW; source of DRA/11/120 note
Dear Louise / Glamorgan Archives, Thank you for your reply of 6 October 2026 under reference 2026/4274. I note and accept: 1. D153/1–8 is held at the National Library of Wales. I will pursue that sequence with NLW (catalogue entry for deeds in p. Llandough including the dwelling adjoining the churchyard, 1811, D153/1–2). 2. DRA/11/120 (formerly D/DRa 11/120) forms part of the Elder’s Navigation Colliery, Maesteg series (DRA/11/1–293) and does not relate to Llandough-juxta-Penarth or to Tynywain. I will not treat it as evidence for this site. The DRA/11/120 form appeared in secondary notes I was checking; your correction is helpful and I will mark it as a wrong reference for this research. No further action is requested from Glamorgan Archives on those two points. I remain grateful for the earlier 2026/4097 searches and copy offers. Yours faithfully, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]

M72 · 10 Oct 2026 19:11 UTC · Sion Buckler · Thank you for the searches and copies – remaining references (2026/4097)
Dear Glamorgan Archives, Thank you for the detailed response of 2026/4097, the identification of further references (UC/73/1–5, DCVG/C/4/36/76-77, DCVG/C/4/36/94, D696, DBDT/1/3, DBDT/18/1, DBDT/79/1, ACA/8/2) and the offer of paid searches/copies. Please confirm: 1. Whether any of the newly identified references contain the 1969 root deed, the 1938 conveyance, or any notice served on the occupying family in 1982–83. 2. The cost and timescale for obtaining copies of the items most likely to contain title or possession material. Yours faithfully, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]
M73 · 10 Oct 2026 19:13 UTC · Sion Buckler · Bute X.6(12) — 1877 Bute trustee accounts/receipts and possible Great House Farm / Llandough transaction
Dear Cardiff Central Library Local Studies / Manuscripts Team, Glamorgan Archives has advised me (email reference 2026/4097b, received 30 September 2026) that your library holds a Bute collection containing reference Bute X.6(12), described as “abstracts of payments and receipts by the trustees of the Marquis of Bute’s properties, 1877 (copy)”. I am writing to establish access to that exact item and to ask whether related Bute Estate records in the same collection may assist a targeted historical search. The property under investigation is Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr, Llandough-juxta-Penarth, adjoining St Dochdwy’s Church (approx. ST 168 733), Cardiff. Please keep this distinct from the separate Llandough Farm opposite the hospital, Llandough juxta-Cowbridge, and Llandow. The historical question is whether surviving estate material in 1876–1878 records a transaction involving Daniel Thomas / D. Thomas and the Bute Estate or its trustees concerning this particular farm/defined parcel. That is a research question, not an assertion that X.6(12) necessarily concerns this property. Please confirm: 1. whether Bute X.6(12) is still held by Cardiff Central Library, its full item title/date coverage and any catalogue or manuscript identifier; 2. whether the item can be inspected or copied, what the booking/form/fee conditions are, and whether a digital image of the relevant 1877 entry can be supplied; 3. whether staff can check the entry/index for Daniel Thomas, D. Thomas, Great House Farm/Tŷ Mawr, Llandough, Llandough Limeworks, quarrying/mineral rights or a dwelling adjoining St Dochdwy’s churchyard; 4. whether related Bute X.6 account/receipt volumes, estate ledgers, correspondence, rent/lease records, conveyances or attached maps/plans survive for 1876–1878 and can be searched; and 5. if no relevant entry is found, which volumes/indexes were checked and whether there is a reliable route to other Cardiff Library manuscript registers or a transfer/custody record. For any possible match, please provide the exact reference, date, parties as written, property description, amounts/transaction terms if recorded, acreage/boundaries, and whether a map or plan accompanies the entry. Please do not infer that a generic “Llandough” entry refers to this farm without a supporting description. Thank you for your help. Please direct me to the correct collection custodian if Bute X.6(12) has moved or is managed elsewhere. Kind regards, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]

Dear Ms Denham, Mary Doreen Williams: death registration On 30 September 2026 the Vale of Glamorgan Registration Service told me they could not find a death record for Mary Doreen Williams in the Vale, and that they had passed my request to Cardiff. I have not had a reply from Cardiff. Please could you: 1. confirm whether Cardiff Register Office holds a registration of death for Mary Doreen Williams; 2. if it does, tell me how I can obtain a certified copy and the fee; and 3. if it does not, tell me which indexes and registers were searched, so that I can search the GRO death index for the correct registration district. If you need further details to carry out the search (approximate date or place of death, date of birth, last address), please tell me what you need and I will supply it. I am asking as a family member and I need the registration for estate administration. Thank you for your help. Regards, Sion Buckler [personal passage omitted — not about the farm case]

Glamorgan Archives, Location request only. I am not asking to book a screen room. Property: Great House Farm / Ty Mawr, Llandough-juxta-Penarth (not Llandough-juxta-Cowbridge). Working description, not a finding: two parcels; Mary Williams owned the house and garden parcel. Please state whether you hold, and if so the series, accession, box, shelf and CALM reference, for: 1. Llandough-juxta-Penarth vestry minutes and churchwardens’ accounts covering 1870–1930 that name Great House, Ty Mawr, or a Williams occupier or owner; 2. the tithe apportionment and map for the parish, and the plot number or numbers for that holding; 3. any enclosure award for the parish that names the holding. Please also say whether staff have physically checked that the item is in the stated place (who, date, store). If not held, name the systems searched and whether a physical file was retrieved. Dear Louise Hunt, Thank you for your email of 6 October 2026 (ref 2026/4274). I note that D153/1–8 is held at the National Library of Wales and will pursue that route with them. I also note your clarification that DRA/11/120 (formerly D/DRa 11/120) relates to Elder’s Navigation Colliery, Maesteg, and is not relevant to Great House Farm / Ty Mawr, Llandough-juxta-Penarth. The reference originated from earlier research notes; I will not pursue it further with Glamorgan Archives. Thank you for the clear direction. Dear Sion Thank you for your email regarding Mary Doreen Williams 1 Cardiff Register Office does not hold the registration of death for Mary Doreen Williams 2 The indexes that were search were FREEBMD where the reference number VOLUME 28 PAGE NO 3029 comes up. Note. If you quote this to our head office based in Southport they can do the certificate from there for you In 1983 South Glamorgan was a vast area so the registration could be in any district. If you would like I will pass this on to our team at the Glamorgan Archives and they can tell you which register office that you would need to contact but advised previously it is better to get a copy of the certificate from our head office as we definitely do not hold the record for Mary Doreen Williams here with us in Cardiff. Hi Sion I have checked with the Glamorgan Archives to see what districts would have come under South Glamorgan in 1983 and they give me Bridgend. Pontypridd and Merthyr Tydfil. I have checked with all these districts and they do not hold a death record for Mary Doreen Williams in the March qtr of 1983. I have also checked with Thornhill Crematorium to see if they had a burial or cremation record here in Cardiff and they don’t hold any record either. They also checked Glyntaff Crematorium and Coychurch Crematorium and they don’t hold any record of the burial or cremation there either. As previously discussed with you if you quote VOLUME 28 PAGE NO 3029 to our head office they will do a copy of the certificate from there for you. Their contact telephone number is [removed] or alternatively you can email Order a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate – GOV.UK<https://www.gov.uk/order-copy-birth-death-marriage-certificate>. There is nothing more that I can do for you with this request as we do not hold the record here in Cardiff. I am sorry that I cannot be of more help to you and good luck in your search. Glamorgan Archives, This is a location and content request only, under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. I am not asking to book a searchroom visit. It is separate from refs 2026/3793, 2026/4097, 2026/4097b and 2026/4274. PLEASE NOTE: DUPLICATE PLACE AND FARM NAMES IN GLAMORGAN Glamorgan has two parishes called Llandough, and each had a farm called Great House. IN SCOPE: Llandough-juxta-Penarth (Llandough near Penarth and Cardiff), hundred of [removed]. Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr stood beside St Dochdwy’s church, approx. ST 168 733. OUT OF SCOPE: Llandough-juxta-Cowbridge (Llandough near Cowbridge), and the Great Houses at nearby Llandow and Aberthin. Please do not send or rely on records for the Cowbridge-area places. If an entry says only “Llandough” or “Great House” and the parish cannot be told, please say so rather than assume. Part 1 — Glamorgan land tax, DBJ/O/90-94, assessments and receipts, 1691–1707 (NRA 5219). Please tell me: 1. Which items in DBJ/O/90-94 cover the parish of Llandough-juxta-Penarth or the [removed] hundred, and for which years. 2. Whether any catalogue, index or transcript you hold names the proprietors and occupiers listed for Llandough-juxta-Penarth in those years. If so, please supply those names and sums. 3. The cost of a staff search or copy limited to those entries only. Part 2 — A lease of Great House said to date from 1667. Our understanding (not yet supported by a document; SOURCE PENDING) is that the Williams family took Great House, Llandough-juxta-Penarth, in 1667 on a lease for 999 years. Great House is described in published sources as a freehold of the Vaughan family from the 16th to the late 18th century, after which it came to the Bute estate. Please tell me whether you hold: 4. Any lease, counterpart lease, assignment or enrolment, c.1660–1675, of Great House or any messuage in Llandough-juxta-Penarth, to any person named Williams, or for a term of 999 years (or any other long term). 5. Any later deed, abstract of title, schedule or rental (including in the Bute, DBDT or Western Ground Rents material) that recites or refers to a lease of Great House for 999 years or for a long term. 6. The conveyance by which the Bute estate (or the Windsor family) acquired Great House from the Vaughan family or its heirs, or any copy, abstract or reference to it. 7. Any Vaughan of Llandough family papers. The aim is to establish who owned and occupied Great House from 1667 onward and on what tenure, and to test the family’s 1667 date. If you consider any of this reasonably accessible by other means under section 21, please say exactly where and how.
