Quotation (verbatim; obvious OCR letter errors corrected only): “Swine fever has broken out at Llandough and Rhoose this week. Five pigs belonging to Mr Williams, Great House, have been slaughtered. On Tuesday morning, one of a herd of 23 was reported as being affected, and it was feared that the whole would have to be slaughtered.” (Barry Dock News; the Glamorgan Gazette gives the herd as 22.)

Fits with: The directories place John Williams at Great House Farm, Llandough, from 1868 to 1901 (EV-0225).

Lead: Glamorgan County Council / Board of Agriculture swine-fever returns for 1894 may name the holding. SOURCE PENDING.

Cuts against: The report gives no first name. Another Great House exists near Cowbridge (Llandough-juxta-Cowbridge); this report is about Llandough with Rhoose, which leaves the parish to be confirmed (see the Excluded: not our farm page).

Proves: A Mr Williams of Great House, Llandough, kept a herd of over 20 pigs in 1894 and lost at least five to swine fever.

Does not prove: Tenure or ownership; which Llandough beyond doubt (Llandough-juxta-Penarth is the likelier, given the Barry paper and the directories).

Our case; not a finding of any court. Catalogued by Tab for Sion Buckler, 19 Oct 2026.
