Catalogue entry (verbatim): MAF 32/1220/39: “Parish No. 39 Parish: Penarth.” (1941–1943; open; not digitised).
Inference, not fact: No MAF 32 entry for a Llandough or Cogan parish was found. Llandough civil parish was added to Penarth in 1902, so a 1941 return for Great House Farm would probably be filed under Penarth. That is an inference; the farm’s form has not been seen and may not survive.
Why it matters: The survey forms for this series generally record the occupier, whether owner or tenant, the owner’s name, and the water supply to the farmhouse and fields. For this farm that would give the recorded tenure in 1941 and the water source before the cut-off Mrs Buckler described in 1958 (EV-0037). Mary (Nancy) Williams’s statement also says her father had “difficulty in farming the land to the satisfaction of the War Agricultural Executive Committee” (Mary (Nancy) Williams’s Statement (c. 1974)); the survey was carried out through those committees.
Cuts against: The form could record John Williams in 1941 as tenant of the whole farm, with Western Ground Rents as owner. That would cut against Parcel A being outside the tenancy. What the form holds for this farm is unknown.
Proves: The National Archives holds the 1941–43 National Farm Survey farm records for Penarth parish.
Does not prove: That Great House Farm’s form is in the bundle, or what it says.
